Chapter 19: Moving on

The sun rose steadily in the sky as Dao Wei and Liu Mingxia set out on their journey together. The forest had thinned, giving way to rolling hills and scattered groves of ancient trees. Their pace was brisk but measured, each step bringing them closer to their destination. The bond between them grew with each passing mile, forged in the crucible of shared danger and mutual respect.

Liu Mingxia glanced at Dao Wei, her curiosity getting the better of her. "Tell me, Dao Wei, why did you decide to leave the Lower Ashura World and come to the Mortal Realm?"

Dao Wei took a deep breath, his eyes scanning the horizon. "It's a long story," he began, his voice calm and reflective. "I was raised by one enigmatic master who taught me the ways of the Heavens and Earth. After reaching Sainthood, I felt a pull to explore the wider world, to understand my place within it."

Liu Mingxia nodded thoughtfully. "It takes a lot of courage to leave behind everything you know and venture into the unknown." However, she was really surprised to see such a young Saint.

"I believe we all have a path to follow," Dao Wei replied. "And sometimes, that path leads us to unexpected places."

They continued in companionable silence, the landscape around them gradually changing. The hills grew steeper, the air cooler as they climbed higher into the foothills of a towering mountain range. As they walked, Dao Wei's thoughts turned inward, reflecting on his journey so far and the challenges that lay ahead.

Their path took them through a narrow ravine, the walls of rock rising steeply on either side. The sound of rushing water echoed through the confined space, creating an almost otherworldly atmosphere. Liu Mingxia shivered, wrapping her cloak tighter around her shoulders.

"This place feels... eerie," she murmured.

Dao Wei nodded, his senses on high alert. "Stay close. We don't know what might be lurking in the shadows."

As if on cue, a low growl reverberated through the ravine. Dao Wei's hand instinctively went to the hilt of his sword, his eyes scanning the darkness. Liu Mingxia drew her own weapon, a sleek dagger that glinted menacingly in the dim light.

From the shadows emerged a pack of wild beasts, their eyes glowing with a predatory light. Dao Wei moved quickly, placing himself between Liu Mingxia and the threat. The lead beast, a massive wolf-like creature, bared its fangs and lunged at him.

With a swift, fluid motion, Dao Wei unsheathed his sword and struck the beast down. The others hesitated, wary of the skilled warrior before them. Liu Mingxia stepped forward, ready to join the fray, but Dao Wei raised a hand to stop her.

"I'll handle this," he said firmly. "Stay back."

He moved with blinding speed, his sword flashing in the dim light as he dispatched the remaining beasts with practiced ease. When the last one fell, Dao Wei sheathed his sword and turned to Liu Mingxia.

"Are you alright?" he asked, concern evident in his voice.

Liu Mingxia nodded, her expression a mix of admiration and relief. "I'm fine, thanks to you. Your skills are incredible."

Dao Wei smiled faintly. "I've had a lot of practice."

They continued through the ravine, the atmosphere gradually lightening as they emerged on the other side. The landscape opened up into a wide, verdant valley, the air filled with the scent of blooming flowers. Liu Mingxia took a deep breath, savoring the fresh air.

"It's beautiful here," she said softly.

"Yes, it is," Dao Wei agreed. "But we must remain vigilant. Beauty can often hide danger."

As they made their way through the valley, they encountered more obstacles—treacherous streams, dense thickets, and sudden changes in weather. Each challenge tested their resolve and pushed them to their limits, but they faced them together, their bond growing stronger with each trial.

One evening, as they set up camp under a canopy of stars, Liu Mingxia turned to Dao Wei with a thoughtful expression. "You mentioned your master earlier. What was he like?"

Dao Wei's eyes softened with a mix of nostalgia and respect. "He was a very weird man. He taught me everything I know though. He believed that true strength comes from within, from understanding oneself and one's purpose."

Liu Mingxia nodded, her eyes reflecting the flickering flames of their campfire. "It sounds like he was a great teacher."

"He was," Dao Wei said quietly.

They fell into a comfortable silence, each lost in their own thoughts. The night was peaceful, the sounds of the forest a soothing backdrop to their quiet contemplation.

The following days brought more challenges, but also moments of beauty and wonder. They traversed towering cliffs, crossed roaring rivers, and navigated dense forests.

Along the way, they shared stories of their pasts, their hopes, and their fears. Liu Mingxia spoke of her upbringing in the Demon Sect, the pressures of her role as princess, and the complex dynamics of her family. Dao Wei listened intently, offering insights and support.

In turn, Dao Wei shared more about his time in the Lower Ashura World, the trials he faced, and the lessons he learned. Liu Mingxia was fascinated by his tales, her respect for him growing with each story.

One afternoon, as they rested by a serene lake, Liu Mingxia turned to Dao Wei with a serious expression. "Do you ever wonder if the path you're on is the right one?"

Dao Wei considered her question carefully. "I think everyone has doubts at times. But I believe that as long as we stay true to our principles and strive to do what is right, we are on the right path."

Liu Mingxia smiled, a hint of relief in her eyes. "Your words give me strength, Dao Wei. Thank you."
