99. You Can Use Magic Too?

"Where did it go?"

Allen's face turned grave as he quickly retreated, pressing himself against the trunk of a thick, withered tree. In the space between the two large trees where the Water hag had disappeared, only two footprints remained.

What happened?

Isn't the Water hag supposed to hide underground only in the swamp?

Can it hide in this snowy ground too?

But if that's the case, why didn't it attack together with the drowners earlier?

One question after another arose, making Allen grip his sword tightly as he looked around. The snow on the ground remained undisturbed, and there were no sudden new footprints appearing around him. Only the last four drowners, with blood-red eyes, charged at him, undeterred by the danger.

With a creature lurking in the shadows, Allen had no mood to toy with these small fry any longer. Holding the sword in his left hand to guard his front, he extended the index finger of his right hand quickly forward.

Igni Sign.

A surge of heat rose from near his heart, flowed through his right hand, and burst forth. Sparks flew, instantly igniting the drowners covered in their companions' blood. They howled in pain and ran in all directions.

"Squawk! Squawk-squawk—"

Amid the drowners' cries, Allen didn't step forward to finish them off. The flames were enough to ensure their death. He squatted down, letting his magic flow through his heart once more. Then, while staying alert, he pressed his right palm against the snowy ground.

Magic flowed out from the five fingers, following the magical pathways to the ground in an orderly fashion. In the blink of an eye, a magical circle emitting a faint purple glow surfaced on the ground. Its radius was about three meters, and the edges of the circle glimmered with faint purple runes.

Yrden Sign.

This was a magical trap set on the ground or floor, capable of affecting enemies that stepped into it with various effects. However, at Allen's level, it could currently only slow down enemies. But that was enough for him.

The winter sun slanted as a cold wind picked up. Unnoticed, a thin mist gradually enveloped the lakeside. After placing the Yrden Sign, Allen looked up and saw the mist, momentarily stunned. The familiar scene made him instinctively link to the Miracle pearl. Sure enough, the mist disappeared from his sight.

So...

"Is there another Water hag?"

Allen's expression darkened.

What kind of luck is this today?

Either he couldn't find any monsters for an hour, or when they did come, it was a whole group.

"Bang~"

The clinking of bottles and jars made Allen wary. He quickly took a red potion from his pouch with his left hand and poured it onto Elsa. Both Water hags and drowners were necrophage creatures. It couldn't hurt to apply some necrophage oil to his sword.

"Creek~"

It seemed that his action of applying the oil revealed a flaw. Amidst the rustling branches, a sudden gust of wind arose above Allen's head.

"Clang~"

Sparks flew.

The silver sword intercepted a sharp claw just in front of him. The blue cat eyes contracted sharply, with only a finger's width between them and the sharp claw.

"How did the Water hag get up the tree?"

"And how is it so strong?"

Allen was shocked. The numbness in his wrist told him that the Water hag's strength was definitely above his. If it weren't for the Yrden Sign being in place, his eyes might have been gouged out by now. He immediately exerted force with his right arm, throwing the monster off.

"Swish! Swish!"

He quickly circled the withered tree, retreating two steps while staying alert. He hadn't forgotten that there was at least one more Water hag lurking around, and he needed to ensure his back was safe. Moreover, the Yrden Sign was placed around this tree, so Allen could only move within its range.

"Chuckle-chuckle~"

A bizarre laugh suddenly came from the Water hag, sounding like the yowling of a wild cat at night, eerie and creepy. It stayed where it was without rushing to attack, raising its right hand and shaking it. On the Water hag's right arm was a bone tied to it, looking like a small forearm bone.

"Chuckle~chuckle-chuckle~"

The eerie laugh suddenly became rhythmic. This felt just like when Allen first heard the drowner king casting the ice spike spell.

"Hmm?"

Allen was instantly alert, hiding half his body behind the withered tree.

Is it chanting a spell?

But in the game, besides throwing mud, Water hags didn't use any other magic!

In his mind, he decisively linked to the wolf medallion.

"Sure enough, it's casting magic!" Allen was astonished.

A faint blue light slowly flowed into the strange bone on the Water hag's arm. The bone flickered with blue light, in sync with the monster's creepy laugh.

Until...

"...Chuckle-chuckle!"

The strange rhythmic laughter abruptly stopped. The bone's brightness in Allen's vision suddenly increased.

"Pop!"

With a soft sound, the Water hag turned into a cloud of white mist. Allen was momentarily stunned.

Isn't this the foglet's skill?

So that mist earlier was actually the foglet?

In his magic-enhanced vision, the mist was glowing faintly blue, drifting slowly towards him.

Switching to the Orb of Veils vision, he couldn't see anything.

"Indeed!"

Allen understood. Then he seemed to think of something, a peculiar smile appearing on his face. He looked down at Elsa in his hand. In his haste, the necrophage oil hadn't been evenly applied, covering only about a third of the blade in a faint red glow.

So.

He retreated while in his magic-enhanced vision, leading the mist around. He took out another bottle of red necrophage oil from his pouch. Then meticulously and carefully applied it to Elsa.

A minute later.

"Swish~"

The crystal bottle was discarded in the snow. Elsa's blade now evenly glowed with a faint red light. Allen stopped, excitement gleaming in his eyes as he looked at the mist just two steps away. With a sudden step, he closed the distance to the mist in an instant.

Followed by a series of slashes. The faint red glow cut through the mist three times, seemingly hitting nothing. But Allen didn't think so. He held his breath, gripping Elsa tightly, his eyes fixed on the front.

Time seemed to fly by.

The faint blue mist in his vision halted, then swiftly coalesced back into the form of the Water hag.

"Chuckle—"

The Water hag screamed as it appeared, dark red tears streaming from its pale eyes, making its hideous face even more terrifying.

"Just as I thought!"

Allen's eyes brightened, seizing the moment. He swung his silver sword in a rapid arc.

"Slash!"

The head, streaming with blood tears, fell, and dark red blood sprayed out instantly.

"Ding!"

[Monster "Water hag" defeated!]
