The words rang in my head like a hammer against a glass, cracking everything I thought I knew. My breath hitched. My hands curled into fists at my sides.

"What did you just say?" I asked again, my voice was sharp, cutting through the air.

The room went silent. They all turned to me, their faces shifting from surprise to something unreadable.

Don's grandmother was the first to recover. She sat straight, smoothing the folds of her gown. "Jess, dear, this isn’t something you should....." I didn't even notice her there.

"Answer me" I said cutting through her words while stepping further into the room. It was rude but my chest tightened with rage. "What do you mean, the contract has been fulfilled? What contract?" I asked another time.
