Chapter 66

Summer and Logan were busy in their small kitchen by the riverbank, preparing a humble yet satisfying meal from their harvest. Logan had just returned with two eggs borrowed from a neighbor, and Summer was already mixing the chopped chives with cornmeal in a large bowl.

The kitchen was warm, with the door curtains removed due to the summer heat. The aroma of stir-fried eggplant filled the air, complemented by the freshness of sautéed cucumber and greens. Finally, the scent of the savory chive and cornmeal pancakes sizzling in the pan added a delightful touch to the culinary symphony.

As they sat down to eat, Summer remembered Logan's preference not to share a meal with a woman, so she divided everything neatly down the middle before they started. "All set, half for each of us," she said with a smile, to which Logan responded with an amused yet appreciative look.

Their fellow tenants, including Henry and his group, also noticed the feast. They had been quietly enduring their own plain meal of steamed bread, waiting until Summer and Logan had finished and left before bringing out their food. The aroma and sight of the freshly cooked dishes were enough to stir envy among them.

"Where did all this come from?" Sophia asked, breaking the silence. "Did they grow it themselves?"

"I don't think so," Charlie replied thoughtfully. "Look at that plot near the riverbank. It's miraculous they've managed to grow so much there."

Curiosity piqued, they finished their meal quickly and headed towards Summer and Logan's plot. As they approached, they couldn't believe their eyes—tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, and chives flourishing in what seemed like unforgiving soil.

Leonardo reached out towards a tender cucumber, but before he could touch it, Henry's stern voice cut through the air, "Don't even think about it!"

Startled, Leonardo withdrew his hand as Henry continued, "What are you all staring at? Just because they have all this, doesn't mean we need to covet it."

Henry's authoritative tone silenced them momentarily. However, the intrigue remained, especially after Logan casually strolled over, a mischievous grin on his face. He stopped in front of Henry and remarked, "Planning a group vegetable heist, Henry? No need for that hassle. If you want some, just ask me."

Henry's expression darkened as he retorted, "Rest assured, Logan, I won't be knocking on your door for handouts."

"Fair enough," Logan replied, his gaze shifting to Summer. "And remember, Henry, anything concerning Summer's affairs is now my concern."

The implication hung heavily in the air, catching everyone off guard, especially Lily, whose expression betrayed utter disbelief. Was Logan, of all people, really standing up for Summer?
