Synopsis

In 1937 Arkansas, 17-year-old Marshall Bentwood longs for the day he can escape the farm he hates. His wish comes true, but at a deadly cost when his brother, James, is murdered. The murders intended to kill Marshall, but they kill James in a case of mistaken identity.

Not satisfied to wait on the law, he declares his own justice on the bootleggers responsible for the murder. Though he knows in his heart he has done what’s right, to try and protect what’s left of his family from retribution, he heads west.

Along the way he meets destitute families, traveling minstrels, railroad “bulls” and a human disaster in the form of the worst school disaster in the history of the United States that tests his fortitude, honesty and faith.

Though he expects never to return to Arkansas, the family of one of the bootleggers declares war on him and his family by kidnapping Marshall’s six-year old sister. The kidnappers issue an ultimatum saying if he doesn’t return by a certain time and date, the girl will be killed.

Desperate, he turns himself over to a Texas Ranger who transports him back to Arkansas just in time to beat the vicious family’s deadline. What follows is a deadly meeting between the two families in the snowy woods of The Ridge that brings this bloody feud to a stunning conclusion.
