Chapter Four: Shadows of the Past

A Growing Reputation

Jiang Hao's reputation as a healer and a purveyor of spiritual devices grew steadily. Word of his successful healing of Li Hua's grandmother spread, bringing more customers to his stall. Some sought charms and talismans, while others came for his healing abilities. Each day, he honed his skills and gathered more qi, his cultivation slowly but surely advancing.

One evening, as he was closing up his stall, a hooded figure approached him. The figure moved with a grace and purpose that immediately put Jiang Hao on edge. The stranger stopped a few paces away, their face hidden in the shadows of the hood.

"Jiang Hao," the figure said, their voice low and cold. "I have a task for you."

Jiang Hao narrowed his eyes. "And who might you be?"

The figure chuckled, the sound sending a chill down Jiang Hao's spine. "That is of no concern to you. What matters is that you have something I need."

Before Jiang Hao could respond, the figure lunged at him, a glint of steel flashing in the dim light. Jiang Hao barely had time to draw Riptide, deflecting the blade aimed at his throat. The force of the blow sent him stumbling back, but he quickly regained his footing.

### The Battle

The marketplace, usually bustling with life, was eerily empty. Jiang Hao and the mysterious cultivator circled each other, the tension thick in the air. The stranger's movements were fluid and precise, indicating a high level of skill and experience.

"You've made a mistake coming here," Jiang Hao said, his voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through him.

The cultivator laughed again, a mocking sound. "We'll see about that."

With a swift motion, the cultivator attacked again, their blade slicing through the air with deadly accuracy. Jiang Hao parried the strike and countered with a series of quick, precise slashes. The clang of metal echoed through the empty marketplace as they clashed, each trying to gain the upper hand.

Jiang Hao could feel the difference in their cultivations. His opponent was more powerful, their qi more refined and potent. But Jiang Hao had faced worse odds before. He drew upon his reserves, his movements becoming faster and more fluid as he channeled his qi.

### A Life and Death Struggle

The battle intensified, the air crackling with energy. Jiang Hao's focus was absolute, his mind and body working in perfect harmony. He dodged a vicious thrust and spun around, landing a solid kick to the cultivator's midsection. The force of the blow sent the stranger staggering back, but they recovered quickly, their eyes burning with anger.

"You'll regret that," the cultivator snarled, their voice laced with venom.

Jiang Hao readied himself for the next attack, but before it could come, a voice rang out.

"Stop!"

Both fighters turned to see Lin Mei standing at the edge of the marketplace, her eyes wide with shock and fear. "What are you doing?" she demanded, her gaze fixed on Jiang Hao.

The cultivator took advantage of the distraction, launching a powerful blast of qi at Jiang Hao. The energy hit him square in the chest, sending him crashing to the ground. Pain radiated through his body, but he forced himself to stand, his determination unwavering.

"Lin Mei, get out of here!" Jiang Hao shouted, his voice strained.

But Lin Mei didn't move. Instead, she stepped forward, her expression resolute. "No, I'm not leaving you."

The cultivator sneered, raising their blade for the final blow. But before they could strike, Lin Mei raised her hand, a burst of qi emanating from her palm. The energy collided with the cultivator, throwing them back and giving Jiang Hao a chance to recover.

### The Final Stand

With renewed determination, Jiang Hao surged forward, his blade a blur of motion. He fought with everything he had, his attacks relentless and precise. The cultivator, caught off guard by Lin Mei's intervention, struggled to keep up.

Finally, with a powerful slash, Jiang Hao disarmed his opponent, sending their blade clattering to the ground. He pointed Riptide at the cultivator's throat, his eyes blazing with fury.

"Who sent you?" he demanded, his voice cold and commanding.

The cultivator hesitated, their eyes darting between Jiang Hao and Lin Mei. "You'll find out soon enough," they spat before disappearing in a swirl of dark energy.

Jiang Hao lowered his sword, breathing heavily. He turned to Lin Mei, who rushed to his side, her eyes filled with concern.

"Are you okay?" she asked, her voice trembling.

Jiang Hao nodded, wincing at the pain in his chest. "I'll be fine. Thanks to you."

### Another Encounter

As they walked back to his stall, Jiang Hao couldn't help but feel a deep sense of gratitude towards Lin Mei. She had risked her safety to help him, and her presence had turned the tide of the battle.

"Lin Mei," he said softly, "why did you come here?"

She looked at him, her eyes filled with a mixture of emotions. "I heard about your healing abilities, and I wanted to see you. I didn't expect to find you in a life-and-death struggle."

Jiang Hao smiled faintly. "This world is more dangerous than it seems. But I'm glad you were here."

Lin Mei's gaze softened. "So am I."

As they reached his stall, Lin Mei hesitated. "Jiang Hao, there's something I need to tell you."

He looked at her, sensing the seriousness in her tone. "What is it?"

She took a deep breath. "I think that cultivator was sent by someone powerful. Someone who knows about your abilities and wants to stop you."

Jiang Hao's expression hardened. "Then we need to be careful. But no matter what, I'll keep fighting."

Lin Mei nodded, her resolve matching his. "And I'll be here to help you."

In the face of new challenges and growing threats, Jiang Hao found strength in his connection with Lin Mei. Together, they would navigate the dangers of this world, their bond growing stronger with each passing day.
