In a dimly lit space, a solitary white panel appeared, together with the woman's voice. "New player detected. Would you like to create an account now?"
Alesha realized she had never played using her dad's VR device before, since she'd had her own ever since she was first allowed to play. "Yes," she answered aloud.
In response, the glowing white panel expanded, showing several places she would need to fill in her information. The VR system could guess your biological age with a 3 month error range by analyzing the development of your brain, making it impossible for kids to get access to content they were restricted from by law, but it still required you to put your actual birthday in for the company's own legal protection in case of lawsuits. She entered hers, "06-23-3479." Aside from that, it asked for permission to analyze her chip, "For in-game purchases, if desired." She declined. She was playing with her brother for his sake, and had no plans to sink funds into a game she didn't even know if she would like that much.
Next, she was prompted to enter a username. This was an easy one: "Phosphorescent_Feline." As she finished typing, before she could click "enter," something completely unexpected occurred. The username started to delete itself! She watched in confusion while the letters rapidly disappeared, starting with the final letter and working its way towards the start.
Then, a new username began typing itself in: "Best_SeedOfChaos_001." Wait, wait, wait, what?!
"System?!" She shouted, caught completely by surprise.
[Yes?]
"You… you're in the VR space with me?!"
[Obviously.]
The System clearly thought this wasn't something to be surprised by. "But, how?! How is this possible?!"
[... I should think that would be obvious. Why don't you try making a guess?]
Alesha pressed her fingers to her temple, trying to figure it out. CT-VR devices used sophisticated technology not to simply display the illusion of a world in front of a player's eyes, like ancient VR devices had done, but instead to transfer the consciousness of the player to an incredibly well-coded virtual body in a highly developed virtual world. If the System had come with her, did that mean it had been detected by the device as a part of her consciousness, and thus had been transferred to the virtual space alongside her own?
[Ding ding ding! Something like that. I'm an entity not just attached to your body but to your consciousness, and that consciousness is something this technology can detect. Though "technology" is probably a purposeful misnomer the creators of the device use to block new competitors from appearing… something like this isn't possible without the aid of magic. I can sense strong traces of magic in the device. That is also why I can take action separately from you in here, since I am an inherently magical being.]
Alesha blinked. "Uhh… well alright, I guess. I'm just going to conveniently ignore that, if what you said is true, then you've just once again entirely shattered my worldview with a few casual words. Two days ago, I would have laughed if anyone told me magic exists. Today, I accept that that's the only plausible explanation for everything that's been happening lately."
[Two days ago, you were still in a coma.]
"Whatever. That username is not staying, do you really want me to have to explain to my brother why I chose such a stupid username that's so unlike me?"
The System did not respond. Satisfied, Alesha deleted the System's cocky username and typed her own back in, ready to start the game.
Next came character creation. She selected Dark Elf, female, then designed her avatar. This was accomplished by her looking in a mirror as she changed various attributes--the changes appearing in the mirror but not yet on her body. It would have been too disorienting for some people otherwise. Lavender skin, lithe body, average bust, 5 foot 9 inches in height, subtly sharp nails almost more like claws, the longest elven ears allowed, stark white hair. When she went to change her eye color, she realized that the option to do so was grayed out. "What? Why can't I change my eye color?"
[That would be because not even the game has the power to change your eye color anymore. Your beautiful multi-chromatic eyes are too powerful to be suppressed! Muahahaha!]
Alesha made a face at this. "Darn, I wanted purple eyes."
[Your eyes are already purple. They just have a few other colors as well.]
She stuck her tongue out at the air, perfectly aware that while the System probably couldn't see the action, it could definitely tell she was doing it, as well as read her mind to understand its meaning.
Character creation finished, Alesha hit "Submit." A final prompt asked if she wanted to create a new game or join an existing one, to which she answered the latter.
"Enter the username of the friend whose game you'd like to join!" The display prompted.
She took a second to make sure she was remembering the spelling of her brother's username correctly. Then, she entered it, "xXxBlackDark666xXx," the terribly cringe username making her groan internally. Once again, just to triple check, she confirmed the spelling. Then she hit "Enter."
With a whirlwind of silver fireworks all around her, the black space disappeared, and she entered the game.
