Ye Xiao brought Qiao Si to the small vegetable garden beside the house. Most rural families have a small vegetable garden; it's not very big, but it's enough for their own consumption.
"That patch over there is potatoes," she said. "Go dig out two potatoes, and pinch a few garlic stalks from beside it; that should be enough."
Ye Xiao handed Qiao Si a small trowel.
Although Qiao Si had never done this before, he found it wasn't difficult. After accidentally slicing a potato in half, he dug carefully and precisely, not ruining another one, and then picked a handful of garlic.
Ye Xiao saw Qiao Si was doing a good job, so she turned around and headed to the chicken coop to retrieve a few eggs that were still warm.
The two of them couldn't eat too much; a few simple dishes would suffice.
"Can you drink liquor?" Ye Xiao asked, cradling the eggs.
Sunlight was bathing her, casting layers of orange light around her.
"I can drink."
