Why Not Now

As soon as Hunter and Delilah entered her apartment, Delilah wasted no time in heading for her room, her footsteps quick and deliberate as though she was trying to escape any conversation with him. But before she could disappear, Hunter reached out, gently grabbing her hand.

"Lila," he said softly, his grip firm yet tender. She stopped but didn't turn around. "What's going on?"

Her back was to him, and for a moment, he could see the tension in her shoulders. She took a deep breath, her fingers twitching slightly in his hold. "Nothing's wrong," she said, her voice quieter than usual. Still, she didn't meet his eyes.

Hunter wasn't convinced. Although he had only known her for a short while, he knew her well enough to recognize when something was bothering her.

He gently tugged her closer until she was facing him but she still didn't meet his gaze.
