Afternoon.

The sun's rays lacked their scorching heat, and the wind blew in gusts, giving Yuecheng's early winter a hint of autumn's mild chill.

Fu'an Flower Garden.

Zhou Liao's car was parked at the side of the entrance to the residential complex.

He sat in the car, holding his phone and checking Lai Zhiyun's social media feed for any new posts; there were none—still the same three days of visibility.

Ever since Zhou Liao had added Zhiyun on WeChat, even though he knew she rarely posted updates, he couldn't help checking her profile several times every day.

Exiting the WeChat app, Zhou Liao glanced at the time, looked up Lai Zhiyun's number, and made the call.

"Hello?"

"Are you busy? Should I leave the strawberries in the security room, or..."

As he spoke, Zhou Liao purposefully drew out the end of the word "or" before pausing, hesitation mixed with probing.

"I'm walking my dog."
