"I'm Amanda, your assigned nurse. How are you feeling?"
Kair shook her hand, kind of shaken. Her immediate talking as well as a strong sense of familiarity overtook him. He needed a couple of seconds to think of an answer, which did not go unnoticed by the nurse. Immediately, her expression took a turn for the worse.
"Are you okay? Do you feel any pain? Do you remember anything before you passed out?" Immediately, she launched a barrage of questions at Kair and went over to the holographic displays lining one side of the room which probably displayed information about his vitals.
"N-no, I'm fine. I was just thinking of something." Kair said, hoping to not be subjected to medical treatment seeing as he probably had no funds to his name.
Amanda looked at him sternly, observing him for a couple of seconds before relenting and moving away from the displays.
"If you say so... Still, you must tell me if you feel anything out of the ordinary." She said, still looking at him skeptically.
Kair shook his head, smiling wryly. The reason he had been so shocked about Amanda's appearance was because in his novel, Amanda was the main character's aunt.
Especially seeing the attire she donned and her features... it was exactly the character he had in mind when he had first began designing her.
'Speaking of, I need to confirm something first.'
"Certainly, I'll let you know if something's wrong. Could I maybe ask some questions, though? I've become a bit.. disoriented due to my circumstances." Kair said in a hesitant tone.
Amanda pulled out a chair from under a desk and took a seat, motioning for Kair to continue.
Kair smiled a thankful smile, nodding in gratitude.
"Right, so we are in Cilica City now, correct?" He asked.
"Yes, we are." Amanda asked, her brow wrinkling slightly in question.
Kair sighed.
"I.. was in the wilderness when I got attacked by I'm pretty sure what was a Starry Eagle. After that, I passed out."
"Oh, the guards did report a boy walking into the gates yesterday completely naked with a baby eagle in hand? I guess that was you." Amanda said, a hint of teasing audible in her voice.
Slightly flustered, Kair's eyes widened at the mention of the baby eagle.
"Right! What happened to the bird? Is it alright?" He asked worriedly.
Amanda looked at him, a bit weirdly at first as she stood and exited the room without an answer.
Not knowing why she up and left so suddenly, Kair sat back in a relaxed manner and waited. Soon enough Amanda came back into the room, this time holding a fluffy grey creature in her hands.
This time however, the eagle was awake, looking around curiously as it rested in Amanda's arms. The second it saw Kair however, or rather picked up Kair's scent, the eagle immediately started flapping about, flailing its tails and chirping loudly, sticking its head in his direction.
Both surprised by the bird's sudden outburst, Amanda skipped to Kair's bed and dropped the brid on his lap. The second the bird came into contact with Kair it calmed down, hopping to Kair's chest. It was about the size of his palm, its two tails wagging like a dog's in happiness.
A soft gasp echoed in the room, and Kair turned his head towards Amanda.
She meanwhile was staring at Kair stupidly, her lips shaped in an 'O' as she pointed a finger at him.
"You.. how did you manage to get this one to see you as its mother?!"
Kair looked at her bewildered, then realized one crucial thing that he had forgotten: Amanda's specialization in animals. Having developed a 'Speech Foundation', she was extremely sensitive to living creatures and their behavior.
Her fundamentals lying in communication, she had mastered her branch enough to confidently be able to understand what non-human creatures were saying or wanting to convey with pin-point accuracy, even being able to converse with them on occasion.
Now, how weird would it be when an infant started calling a significantly order creature of a different species, its mother?
It had to be considered that in the current situation of the world, if Kair remembered correctly, beasts and humans weren't exactly on anything even close to amicable terms.
Seeing this scene in front of her, it was rightly so that Amanda was shocked by the level of trust that the boy in front of her had managed to form with a young, and from the looks of it, talented eagle.
'He must have done something to it.' Was the conclusion she came to, and the air visibly darkened, a pressure radiating throughout the room.
Furrowing his brows and sweating slightly, he looked at the eagle which was now curling up on his lap, falling asleep almost instantly. It had its two tails wrapped around itself, like a cat. It was truly adorable.
He struggled to come up with an answer for a moment.
"W-well, after I was attacked by the Starry Eagle in the wilderness which I assume to have been its domain, it kind of died." Kair scratched the back of his head.
"I was going to just leave it there but then I n-noticed that it was pregnant so I ended up pulling out one of the eggs which were still halfway intact and this little one was still alive."
Amanda continued to stare at him, then released the pressure causing Kair to release a breath of his own which he hadn't known that he had been holding. Though she was still staring at him, it was now with light appreciation and amusement rather than hostility.
"Ah, I see. So you reached into its.. ah, okay. You must really love animals, hm?" She asked, chuckling as she went over to Kair and softly patted him on the head.
"Good, I'm proud. With the amount of people that tyrannically treat beasts these days, I'm happy to see that there are still people that still have a soft spot for them."
Feeling somewhat weirded out, but also knowing this was usual behavior for the character, Kair didn't flinch at Amanda's affection. After all, having written her, Kair knew that Amanda had a soft spot for animals which made her display reasonable.
"Haha, I guess you're right.. how old do y-" Before Kair could continue, Amanda fired off a question of her own.
"Have you bonded yourself to her yet? You haven't, have you?" She asked, holding up her palm to stop his own question.
"As you know, after you bond yourself with a beast, the linkage between you two will allow you to communicate as well as immediately get a basic overlook of yourselves. Age, race and everything else included."
"Right, right, I completely forgot..." Kair grimaced.
Honestly speaking, he could very well have created a bond between the baby eagle and himself, but he had been hesitant to.
This was because of dark matter. As is known, dark matter was the source of energy in this world. It is what granted people powers and abilities.
This wasn't what Kair was worried about, it was rather about whether or not he could actually manipulate mana.
Humans, along with any other species, had been granted the ability to evolve.
Evolution, as we all know, only occurs when the environment or the surrounding area of living beings undergoes a change. The body adapts, making slight tweaks and changes in order to make sure that we would be more equipped to handle the new environment optimally.
This process obviously took place over the course of millennia. However, as was visible back on earth, humans hadn't really changed all that much.
Why? Because there had been no need for them to, as determined by their own body. Sure, we may have become more adaptable to living in high altitudes, or becoming able to dive in water for longer periods, but nothing fundamental had drastically changed over the course of the last 1000 years.
However, what if the need for a change suddenly arose? Let's say, the introduction of a new element?
New elements weren't really that impactful on human life, at least back on earth. However, there was one specific mysterious yet somewhat known element which had the potential of impacting day-to-day life to an unfathomable degree.
This was what we used to call dark matter.
An unsolved problem due to the limitations of past humanity, dark matter was purely believed to be a hypothetical existence. Though it apparently played a large role in the formation and evolution of our own universe, next to nothing was known about it.
Especially the fact that it wasn't yet detectable by ancient humans' means made it even harder to research.
However, this lack of information was exactly what Kair had used to his advantage to create a 'power system' in his book.
Who would complain if it was used in a novel to explain how people could manipulate things like fire, for example? No one! Not only did almost no one one know anything about it, but anyone qualified enough to speak on such topics would surely not be reading a random webnovel right?
In Kair's eyes, having no explanation of how and why someone was able to fly after going to a different world was just lazy writing. Though his wasn't perfect either, at least it provided some form of reasoning that people couldn't argue against, right?
'Sure the concept of being able to fly to space was cool, but at least provide an explanation, will you?'
Going off of that mindset, Kair created an event that took place in the year 3000. After countless years of development in the technical industry, scientists finally were able to detect dark matter.
Being introduced to this element, scientists began experimenting with it. Be it moving it around, seeing how it affected our surroundings and even testing it on living subjects.
Nothing was left out. However, even within the scientific world there exist extremely immoral ones. Those who would put other people's lives at risk just to prove a theory were not many, but definitely multiplied in the masses after the discovery of the 'mystery element'.
Those scientists then got themselves human 'volunteers' and began locking them in chambers, injecting them with abnormally large amounts of dark matter particles, just to see what would happen.
And the result? Evolution.
Being constantly surrounded by the new element, the brain and body unconsciously started experimenting with it too, testing it out for themselves.
Soon enough, scientists began to notice a small mass forming in the middle of the brains of those individuals that had been subjected to the borderline torturous procedure.
Before being able to yield proper results however, the patients died due to the sensitive structure of the brain.
The most important organ in the human body, it was responsible for making us what we are.
Any damage or even modification to the brain could spell death. Its intricacy was not to be underestimated. Even almost a millennium after the 21st century, the machinations of the brain were a deeply buried mystery to humans.
Going at the experiments with much more caution, the scientists increased the intensity of performed tests with a border-line maddening drive to prove their own theories.
Repeating this test a countless number of times, centuries had passed before the first patient barely, yet successfully, survived on the 17th of December, 3428.
