41: The Past

Emma strode into the office, her face a mask of cool professionalism. She barely registered the greetings from her colleagues as she made her way to her new corner office. The plaque on the door reading "Emma Reynolds - Managing Director" caught her eye, but even this milestone couldn't lift the fog of confusion and hurt that had settled over her since that morning.

"Come in," Emma called, trying to inject some enthusiasm into her voice.

Her personal assistant, Sarah, entered with a bright smile. "Good morning, Mrs. Reynolds ! Welcome back, and congratulations on the promotion!"

Emma managed a small smile. "Thank you, Sarah."

Sarah's enthusiasm didn't waver. "We've all missed you so much while you were away on your honeymoon. How was it? You must tell me everything!"

The mention of the honeymoon made Emma's stomach clench. Images of James's cold demeanor that morning flashed through her mind.
