First Session

Marvin's day had unfolded in a haze of subdued thoughts and lingering worry. The suspension from school had left him with nothing but time to dwell on the recent events. As the afternoon approached, he sat at the kitchen table, fidgeting with the edges of his notebook. Austin, who had returned from school, was sprawled out on the couch, absorbed in a comic book. The house was unusually quiet, with the occasional rustle of pages breaking the stillness.

Joel, as usual, was at football practice, leaving Olivia to handle Marvin's upcoming counseling session. She moved about the kitchen, preparing a light snack, her demeanor calm but noticeably attentive. She glanced at Marvin, who had been largely silent, his gaze fixed on a spot on the floor.

"Marvin," Olivia said softly, breaking the silence, "Ms. Parker will be here soon. Are you feeling okay?"

Marvin shrugged, not meeting her eyes. "Yeah, I guess."

Olivia set the snack on the table. "It's normal to feel a bit nervous. Ms. Parker is here to help, and you can talk to her about anything you're comfortable with."

Marvin nodded slowly, still not looking up. His silence spoke volumes about his apprehension and reluctance to open up.

Austin looked up from his comic, sensing the weight of the moment. "Hey, Marvin, you want to play a game or something before Ms. Parker gets here?"

Marvin shook his head. "Not right now."

Austin nodded, understanding Marvin's need for space. He returned to his comic, giving Marvin the quiet he seemed to need.

The sound of a car pulling into the driveway broke the silence. Olivia glanced at Marvin, who still seemed absorbed in his own thoughts. She gave him a reassuring smile before heading to the door to greet Ms. Parker.

Ms. Parker arrived, carrying a leather briefcase and a warm smile. She was a woman in her mid-thirties with an approachable demeanor. Olivia led her into the kitchen where Marvin sat, and the introduction was made.

"Hi, Marvin," Ms. Parker said gently, extending her hand. "I'm Ms. Parker. It's nice to meet you."

Marvin hesitated before shaking her hand briefly, his expression guarded. "Hi."

Olivia pulled out a chair for Ms. Parker at the kitchen table. "Marvin, Ms. Parker will be here for a while to talk with you. I'll be nearby if you need me."

Marvin gave a small nod, shifting uncomfortably in his seat. He looked up at Ms. Parker for a moment, then quickly looked away, his fingers nervously tapping on the edge of the table.

Ms. Parker took a seat and opened her briefcase, pulling out a notepad and a few pens. She glanced at Marvin, her eyes full of empathy and patience. "I know this might be a bit overwhelming, but I want you to know that this is a safe space. You can share as much or as little as you're comfortable with. We can take things at your pace."

Marvin remained quiet, his gaze focused on the pattern of the tablecloth. Olivia, sensing the need for her presence, gave Marvin a gentle nod and quietly exited the room, leaving him and Ms. Parker alone.

There was a moment of silence as Ms. Parker allowed Marvin time to adjust. She took a deep breath, her tone soft and encouraging. "So, Marvin, I'd like to start by understanding how you've been feeling lately. If you're up for it, you can tell me a bit about what's been on your mind."

Marvin shifted in his chair, his silence heavy in the room. After a moment, he spoke in a barely audible voice. "I don't know... just... stuff."

Ms. Parker nodded, her expression patient and understanding. "It's okay to feel uncertain about how to express what you're going through. Sometimes it helps to talk about specific events or moments that have been particularly challenging."

Marvin glanced at her briefly, then back at the table. "Like the fight... and being suspended."

Ms. Parker noted the hesitant tone in his voice and gave a reassuring nod. "I understand that those events have been really difficult for you. One of the things we need to address is managing your anger, as it's clearly been a part of these challenges. Would you be comfortable talking about what led up to the fight and how you felt at that moment?"

Marvin's gaze drifted towards the window, his thoughts clearly preoccupied. "I got angry. I don't like when people mess with me. It just... happens."

Ms. Parker listened intently. "Anger can be a powerful emotion, and it's important to find healthy ways to manage it. Sometimes, understanding the triggers that lead to anger and exploring ways to cope with those feelings can make a big difference. Can you think of what might have triggered your anger in that situation?"

Marvin's jaw tightened slightly." It's the way he talked to me...And when he hit me, I... I just wanted to hit him."

Ms. Parker nodded, her tone empathetic. ". It's common to feel that way when someone threatens you. We can work on identifying these triggers and developing strategies to deal with them in a healthier way."

Marvin's silence spoke volumes, but he managed to nod in agreement. Ms. Parker continued to guide the conversation, her approach gentle and supportive. "There are different techniques we can use to manage anger, like deep breathing, taking a step back, or finding other outlets for your emotions. How do you usually feel after an outburst or a confrontation?"

Marvin thought for a moment before responding, his voice low. "It feels like... relief, but then I just feel bad later. Like I shouldn't have done it."

Ms. Parker acknowledged his feelings with a nod. "It's common to feel a mix of relief and regret after a confrontation. What we aim for is to find ways to channel that anger into more constructive actions, so you don't end up in a situation where you regret your actions later."

The session continued, with Ms. Parker using various techniques to help Marvin explore his anger and its impacts. She asked open-ended questions and provided prompts, always giving Marvin the space to respond on his own terms. The conversation was slow and methodical, reflecting Marvin's need for gradual interaction.

As the session neared its end, Ms. Parker began to wrap up. "Marvin, you've done a great job opening up today. I know it's not easy, and it's a process, but we're making progress. Remember, managing anger is about understanding yourself and finding better ways to cope. We'll continue to work on this together."

Marvin managed a small, tentative smile. "Okay. Thanks."

Ms. Parker gave him an encouraging nod. "You're welcome. I'm here to help you through this, and we'll keep working on it."

Olivia returned to the kitchen, her presence a silent support for Marvin as he navigated this new experience. She saw the cautious progress Marvin was making with Ms. Parker and felt a mixture of hope and concern. She knew that Marvin's journey would be challenging, but she was reassured by Ms. Parker's professional and compassionate approach.

Once Ms. Parker left, Olivia walked her to the door. The two women exchanged a few words, their conversation hushed but intense. Olivia wanted to ensure that Ms. Parker had all the information needed to support Marvin effectively.

"Thank you for your patience with Marvin," Olivia said quietly. "I know he can be reserved, but he's been through a lot."

Ms. Parker nodded, her expression thoughtful. "It's understandable. Marvin has shown a lot of strength in facing his challenges. I'd like to learn more about his background to better understand how I can help him."

Olivia glanced around to make sure Marvin wasn't nearby before speaking. "Marvin's past is... complex. He lost his father when he was very young. His father was abusive, and Marvin was forced to defend himself. It was a traumatic experience. After that, he entered the foster care system, and it's been a struggle for him ever since."

Ms. Parker listened intently, her demeanor empathetic. "That must have been incredibly difficult for him. It's clear that he's carrying a lot of pain from his past."

Olivia continued, her voice tinged with sadness. "Recently, Marvin spent a few months in juvenile detention. He got into some trouble, and it was a rough period for him. He's now on probation and trying to adjust back to a normal life. That's why he's been so closed off."

Ms. Parker's expression softened with understanding. "I appreciate you sharing this with me. Knowing Marvin's history helps in tailoring our approach to his therapy. We'll need to be patient and build trust slowly. He's been through a lot, and it will take time for him to feel comfortable opening up."

Olivia nodded, her relief evident. "Thank you. I just want to make sure he gets the support he needs."

Ms. Parker smiled reassuringly. "We'll work together to help him navigate his emotions and experiences. It's a long process, but with the right support, Marvin can make progress."

With their conversation concluded Olivia returned to the kitchen, where Marvin and Austin were now sitting together. Austin was chatting animatedly about his day, trying to bring a sense of normalcy back to the house.

Olivia sat down at the table, her thoughts still lingering on the conversation with Ms. Parker. She gave Marvin a gentle smile. "How did the session go?"

Marvin managed a small, tentative smile. "It was okay. Just... a lot to think about."

Olivia nodded, her tone supportive. "I'm glad you're taking the first steps. Remember, we're here for you."

Marvin looked up briefly, his eyes reflecting a mixture of apprehension and cautious optimism. "Thanks."

As the evening continued, the atmosphere in the house took on a more relaxed tone. Austin, having finished his homework, joined Marvin in the living room. Noticing Marvin's subdued mood, he took the lead in their conversation, trying to ease the tension.

"Hey, Marvin," Austin said, trying to sound casual. "Want to play a game or something? I've got a new one I think you might like."

Marvin looked up, his expression still reserved. "Maybe later. Just tired right now."

Austin nodded, accepting Marvin's need for space but keeping his tone light. "No problem. If you want to talk or hang out, just let me know."

Marvin gave a small nod, grateful for Austin's understanding. He settled into the couch, trying to relax. The quiet companionship of his foster brother was a welcome comfort amid the ongoing difficulties.

As Olivia observed the interaction between Marvin and Austin, she felt a mix of hope and concern. She knew that Marvin's journey was far from over and that the path ahead would be challenging. However, she was reassured by the progress he had made during the counseling session and the support he was receiving from his family.

Later that day, after Marvin's counseling session, Joel returned home from practice. He walked into the living room, where Olivia was sitting on the couch, her expression thoughtful. She looked up as Joel entered, her face brightening with a warm smile.

"Hey Joe," Olivia greeted him, her tone a mix of relief and anticipation. "How was practice?"

Joel returned her smile, setting his bag down and taking a seat on the couch. "It went well. We had a good practice. The team seems to be coming together nicely."

Joel patted the seat next to him, inviting Olivia to sit. "A typical day, you know. How about Marvin's session with Ms. Parker? How did it go?"

Olivia sat down, her expression turning more serious. "It was alright. I mean, Marvin's not exactly open yet. He's still trying to adjust, but Ms. Parker seems like she's got a good approach."

Joel nodded, his gaze thoughtful. "I hope he's making some progress. It's been a lot for him lately, and I know he's struggling."

Olivia sighed, her expression reflecting concern. "Yeah, it's been tough. But I think Ms. Parker is making a positive impact. Marvin needs time, though. He's been through a lot."

Olivia leaned in closer, her voice softening. "I had a chance to talk with Ms. Parker before the session. I shared some of Marvin's background with her—how he's been in foster care since he was eight after what happened with his father, and how he's just gotten out of juvenile detention on probation."

Joel's expression turned more serious, his concern evident. "God everytime I think about it I just feel so sad for him, no kid deserves what happened to him. It's clear that it's impacting him now"

Olivia nodded, her eyes filled with empathy. "I just want to make sure he feels supported and knows that we're here for him. It's important for him to understand that he's not alone in this."

Joel reached out and took Olivia's hand, squeezing it gently. "We'll get through this. Marvin's a tough kid, and with the right support, he can make it through this challenging time."

Olivia gave Joel a reassuring smile. "I believe that too. We just need to keep being there for him and helping him find ways to manage his anger and emotions."

Joel nodded in agreement. "Absolutely. It's going to take time, but we'll get through this as a family. We've got a good team with Ms. Parker and everyone else who's supporting him."

Olivia looked hopeful. "Let's stay positive and keep encouraging Marvin. He needs to know that we're all in this together."
