As the day ended, Nyer looked as Mira for the next two classes wondering why was she so avoided, but he couldn't build up the courage to ask her, letting it go, he was much more interested in magic than Mira right now. As soon as academy's final bell rang, Nyer hurried to his home, along the way many shopkeepers greeted him as him and his grandpa had become quite famous due to their inn business. As Nyer reached home, he went through the back door to his room, keeping his bag on the table, he hurried to his grandpa's office. Opening the door he saw him working, signing documents, tallying the goods making sure none of the expenses were out of place, as he noticed Nyer entering the room, Grandpa asked, "Nyer, how was your day?" as he smiled.
"It was amazing, I made so many friends" Nyer sat down on a chair Infront of grandpa's table.
"That's nice. Did you need something?"
"Yes"
"Oh, what is it?"
"I want to learn magic"
A broad smile appeared on grandpa's face, one he couldn't hold in. "And why you want to learn it?"
"I don't know, I want to learn it"
"I see, wait for me here" Grandpa stood up and left the room, after a minute or two he came back with a book in his hand, it had red leather cover, with a gold and silver spine.
"Here, take this Nyer" Grandpa handed the book to him, his eyes shined as he took the book, it was heavy for him.
"This is a book I got from somewhere, hope you like it, go start reading it in your room."
Nyer immediately raced to his room, keeping the book on the table, the pages were crisp like anew, on the first page he noticed the face of a man, rather young, smiling. Below the photo was the name of the book. 'Magiculus: A book for beginners' below it was the name of the author, 'Wynfir Lag Foster' Nyer turned the pages as he read the book, it took him almost 10 minutes to read the introductory and first chapter'. A week had passed since he started to learn magic, he finally finished the fifth chapter, now ready to make a fireball.
He stood up, closed his eyes, he then chanted the words, "Aii agni ruu, takta prada, ek shamti, ek kad, agg ka gola" but nothing happened, but he did as the author said. Call on to the spirit of fire, ask for its power, set the power, the size of the spell and the shape. He chanted again but nothing happened, but Nyer didn't loose hope, as the author had said it would take time to conjure a spell.
A month passed away, the day was sunny, as in a small field near the village river, Nyer chanted the fire spell again and again, but nothing happened, day by day he was becoming restless and hopeless. The image of the fireball on Leith's hand was slowly vanishing. Whenever Nyer looked at the book, he was reminded of his grandfather's smile when he asked to learn magic, he did not want to disappoint him.
"What are you doing?" A known but never heard voice called out to Nyer. He turned back to notice Mira sitting on a rock.
"I asked, what are you doing?"
Nyer got nervous as soon as he saw her, he still had weird impression of her after their first encounter, also after Leith said not to talk to her.
"I…um…learning magic"
"Magic?" Mira tilted her head, 'but nobody in this village knows magic' Mira thought, but then she noticed the red cover book Nyer was holding. "Who's the author?" she asked pointing towards the book.
"Wynfir" Nyer said nervously.
"Wynfir, I see"
"Do you know him?"
"Yes, he was the master of the white magic tower"
"Wow, you know so much"
"Yeah whatever, so what spell are trying to learn?"
"Fire…ball" Nyer murmured.
"What? Say it louder"
"A…a fireball"
"How long?"
"A month"
'That's a long time' Mira thought. "What's the chant?" Mira asked.
"Um…what?"
"The chant, the lines you say to activate the spell"
"Ou it's: Aii agni ruu, takta prada, ek shamti, ek kad, agg ka gola"
'It seems correct' Mira thought, then Mira thought maybe… "Do you know how we humans are able to use magic?" She asked
"Yes, we borrow power from spirits, that's why 'ruu' meaning spirit"
"That's 99 precent of mages, but there are 1 percent who can make their own magic"
"Personal trait, right?" Nyer guessed.
"That's correct, people with personal trait can't actually borrow power from spirits"
"Do you think I have…"
"Highly unlikely, do you know only 30 percent of the total human population can use magic, including this whole village"
"But Leith can use magic"
"Yes, that's because his father could use magic"
"You think, I won't be able to use magic"
"But…No…" Nyer was slowly breaking down.
"Don't cry too fast" Mira reached to her bag and took out a book, it had a jet-black cover, with gold borders and gold spine. "Here, take this"
Nyer almost about to cry took the book from her, he noticed a gold symbol on the cover of the book, it had a shape of griffin.
"Read that, but in exchange give me your book"
"No, I can't, my grandpa gave it to me"
"I see, then keep my book for a week, if it's helpful then give me yours after you take permission from your grandpa"
"I…thank you"
"Before that, let me show you a spell"
Mira came down the rock, she raised her hand, closing her eyes, he formed a fist, 'agni' she said. She opened her fist towards the sky as a ball of fire appeared.
Nyer's eyes shown in amazement and away, the flames Mira produced were purple, not the yellowish-orange that Leith made. Mira then closed her fist extinguishing the flame.
"Woah, how did you do that? Without a chant."
"Read the book, you will know"
"I will, thank you, why don't we…"
Before Nyer could finish his words, "No, never talk to me in the academy, meet me here one week from now.
