Chapter 121: Sophie Marceau

At the party, after chatting briefly with Cannes Film Festival President Gilles Jacob, Arthur found Isabelle Adjani, the light of France, and asked if she planned to return to Hollywood to make movies.

"Ms. Adjani, are you really planning to retire from acting?" Arthur clinked glasses with the 36-year-old Isabelle Adjani, intending to invite her to star in A Few Good Men!

The 1988 release Camille Claudel had won Isabelle Adjani many awards, but she became so immersed in her role that she announced her retirement from acting.

Who would have thought she still wouldn't return?

Hearing Arthur's question, Isabelle Adjani shook her head slightly and smiled, "I don't really want to take on scripts these past two years. After this period, we can collaborate, okay, Arthur? Right now, I want to spend some time with Daniel!"

Arthur nodded and smiled, "Of course." He then took a sip of his drink.

Isabelle Adjani was in a relationship with Daniel Day-Lewis, who won the Oscar for Best Actor with My Left Foot in 1989.

"Arthur, there are actually other suitable actresses in France right now," Isabelle Adjani smiled.

"Sophie Marceau, now 25, gained fame a few years ago with the La Boum series, becoming The French Kiss!"

"Sophie Marceau?" Arthur thought for a moment. Sophie Marceau wasn't an international star yet, but she was quite well-known in Europe.

After the La Boum series, Sophie Marceau worked on several dramatic films with her much older director boyfriend Andrzej Żuławski, transitioning from an innocent young girl to a sexy goddess.

"Thank you, I'll make sure to send the script to Sophie Marceau," Arthur admired Sophie Marceau's beauty.

While Arthur was chatting with Isabelle Adjani, Nicole Kidman was being approached by Harvey Weinstein of Miramax on the other side of the room.

"You're Nicole Kidman, starred in Days of Thunder with Tom Cruise, right?"

Harvey Weinstein approached Nicole Kidman with a drink in hand and asked.

Nicole Kidman nodded, "I'm Nicole Kidman from Australia. Is there something you need?"

Harvey Weinstein eyed Nicole Kidman with an invasive look, "Miramax has a few scripts in development. Interested in talking about them?"

"Oh, what kind of scripts?" Nicole Kidman knew of Miramax and was aware of Harvey Weinstein. Even Arthur had previously warned her to be cautious of this guy.

Harvey Weinstein smiled, "My office is at the Carlton Intercontinental Hotel. If you're interested, we can talk there!"

"Ah, can't we talk here?" Nicole Kidman asked, smiling awkwardly.

"Dear, it's too noisy here, it would affect our understanding of the scripts," Harvey Weinstein explained with a smile.

"Hey, Harvey, your documentary Truth or Dare with Madonna made quite a splash today. Madonna's bold scene sure captured a lot of attention," Arthur suddenly came over, putting his arm around Nicole Kidman's waist.

Harvey Weinstein smiled, "Ah, Arthur Smith, the famous producer. Not only did Orion's Dances with Wolves win the Oscar for Best Picture, but the thriller The Silence of the Lambs now has a box office over 80 million dollars!"

Arthur shook his head, "Don't worry, The Silence of the Lambs will cross 100 million soon! So, how's Miramax doing now? A couple of years ago, Sex, Lies, and Videotape, My Left Foot, and Cinema Paradiso were great films, right?"

Harvey Weinstein's face twitched. A couple of years ago, Miramax had indeed been very successful, which had made the Weinstein brothers ambitious.

Last year, Miramax bought many films for distribution but lost heavily. This year's quality wasn't much better.

Now, Miramax hoped that Madonna's documentary Truth or Dare would generate some profit. The whole scandal with Madonna at the Film Palace was just to promote this documentary!

"Arthur, you're here to acquire films too?" Harvey Weinstein changed the subject. Now, Galaxy Orion and Miramax were direct competitors.

After all, both companies were independent distributors in North America!

"Yes, I have my eye on a few art films that seem pretty good," Arthur smiled, "We might be competitors again."

"Oh, really? Which films caught your eye?" Harvey Weinstein was genuinely interested.

"The final installment of Lars von Trier's Europe Trilogy, Europa and the Coen brothers' magical and surreal film Barton Fink!"

Arthur didn't hide it since these two films were the hot favorites in the main competition at the Cannes International Film Festival.

The Nordic maverick director Lars von Trier's Europe Trilogy consisted of thrillers. The first was The Element of Crime, which earned a Palme d'Or nomination at Cannes for his debut feature film.

The second was Epidemic, and this year's third installment is Europa. Lars von Trier seemed determined to win the Palme d'Or this year!

The Coen brothers had started gaining attention with their neo-noir psychological horror film Blood Simple, winning the 1st Independent Spirit Award and the Grand Jury Prize at the 2nd Sundance Film Festival.

Both Lars von Trier and the Coen brothers were rising stars in the independent film industry!

Harvey Weinstein nodded, looking at Arthur, and smiled, "Looks like our companies are in for some direct competition. Have a wonderful night, Arthur!"

Saying this, Harvey Weinstein walked away.

Arthur squeezed Nicole Kidman's waist, "Did he just ask you to his hotel to read scripts?"

"Yes, he said Miramax has several projects in development," Nicole Kidman explained softly.

Arthur shook his head, "If you go, you'll find a fat guy in pajamas waiting to take advantage of you!"

"I was just asking," Nicole Kidman whispered into Arthur's ear, "Earlier, you warned me to be careful with some film people."

Arthur nodded, "Yes, don't worry. With me here, no one will dare to mess with you unless you want to."

"Alright, I'm your woman. I'll make it up to you tonight, how about that?" Nicole Kidman teased...
