Nana became more independent as a teenager

During the ninety days mourning, Nana was the one helping her step-mother, she would help her get bread from the bakery and sells going from one place to another, this is the only way they were able to eat and get things needed. The family members didn't fulfill all the promises they made when Nana's father passed, but thank God for the way he brought them up, they were able to do things in their capacity, they lived according to what they can afford and didn't beg to eat. They eat and pay their bills due to Nana's ability to make things out of nothing, It was as if they were all leaving off Nana because she was the one working for what they were eating, she would get bread and sold by hawking around. Nana's step-mothers, both the one in Lagos and in the village had four children each for Nana's father before he died, so the other children used to do the house chores whenever Nana went to sell breads and they also helped her in washing her dirty clothes, Nana doesn't do any house chores, all she does was to bring money home. The woman appreciated her and always pray for her that her children will honor her whenever she needs them, if she calls on one, thousands will answer her.

Nana always go to school as usual and that doesn't stop her from hawking, she does all things accordingly without supervision, she had already knew how to handle all this kinds of business. The only thing the woman does was to make pap( corn flour) which she had been selling since they got to the new house and people already knew her for her neatness, so, when she couldn't hawk, people started going to meet her at her place and the profits also added to their source income but nana was the one that goes to the nearest market to get the maize. The woman thought she was maltreating her, she doesn't know that she was training her how to handle things by herself, she forgot to train her children. Her son got involved in theft and gambling in which nana saw his name on the school black list, she informed his mum but she said she should mind her business. She said she was behaving as if she was the only saint among everyone, as if she was the only one that God watches over her, Nana was so scared to hear that, she doesn't expect that statements from her because she saw her as her own mother. So, whenever her son was involved in anything, she didn't bother to tell her anything until the boy was given suspension in school and was asked to call his parents. He told them that his dad just passed and his mother was still mourning, nobody believed him and he told the teachers to ask Nana that they are both siblings, meanwhile , all the teachers in that school knew nana. The teachers didn't believe him, they thought he was lying, so they called for Nana, that was how Nana got to know and the teachers were surprised with the information they got. They couldn't believe that they were siblings because they had opposite characters entirely. Nana told his mother when she got home but the boy was the one that told her to mind her business this time around in which the mother supported. She still didn't listen to them and continued to tell the mother that he has been given suspension from school and needed someone to follow him to school, that was when the woman knew the gravity of what her son had done.

She started crying that what kind of son God gave him, she doesn't know that she was the one who didn't train his son, she called on one of her elders because most of her family members lived in that village. The man went the following day and was told to sign an undertaken, which he did. The school's principal told him that he should resume after his two-weeks suspension and he should be taught how to behave well and turn a good leaf for his well-being when he resumes back to school or else he will be sent out of the school finally. The man went back to his sister and gave her the feedback and also warned the boy by himself to change for his own good, he said if not he would be the one to hand him over to the police once he hear another report from the school authorities.

After the ninety-days of her mourning, the woman can now go out and do anything she wanted to do, she planned to fry some beans cake for people and also prayed for her deceased husband, she gave out the few clothes she wore through out the mourning as she only wore like four clothes through out the ninety days of mourning and changed to new dress. People came to join her with the prayers as they invited few men of God to lead the prayer session. The woman in Lagos also did the same by offering prayers and giving alms to beggars on that day. The woman in the village continued with her hawking of pap while Nana only hawked bread, the woman started going to the bakery by herself.

Things went on and on, Nana decided to be teaching children after school lesson, she gathered all the children in her community and started teaching them, she also used to collect tokens from the children and used to give all to her step-mother. She learnt how to be independent as a teenager, she does what she needed to do without anyone reminding her, she was very hardworking, nice and understandable. She was so intelligent and did things like elders, she was even wiser than her elder brother and sisters, to the extent that people trust hee judgements. People of her age go to her for advice, she was the type that hated cheating and she doesn't like people taking advantage of other people's intelligent. She was friendly and fun to be with, her peer groups love to be with her. Despite her hawking before going to school, she was one of the best students in science department that year, she used to represent her school and they always came first and she had also collected so many medals

One day, she went to a quiz competition and met a guy, the guy was representing a private school but she came from public school. The boy underrated her and looked down on her but Nana got first place after the whole competition, the boy was surprised that a young girl like Nana got ahead of him. He approached her and exchanged pleasantry, they both talked and laughed together and went there separate ways. She was passing through a place the third day and was surprised to see the same boy he met the day before yesterday playing ball, the boy stopped his friends that were playing the ball to allow this beautiful girl to pass through, they were both shocked seeing themselves living just a few house to each other, they chatted why they haven't seen each other all this while. The boy accompanied her a little bit closer to her house and gone back to playing his football. Her step-mother saw her from distance and her neighbor provoked her so as to discipline Nana for talking with a boy. Nana was the type that was so free, she welcomed both boys and girls in front of her house since she doesn't have any hidden agenda. Her course mates, most especially the boys used to visit her in the house, they would even wait for her if she has went hawking, whenever they met her watching clothes, they might assist her or sat with her chatting.

After one week, the boy she met at the competition wrote a short note asking her to lend him, her Essential mathematics textbook and ABABIO chemistry, he sent his younger brother to deliver the message which he did, but Nana didn't bother to read the message because she thought it was love message because she had never received a note from anybody in her life. When she got inside to check the letter, it wasn't as she expected, she knocked herself on head and said to herself that how could she think that way, as she had already vowed not to have any boyfriend till she finishes her secondary school education. She quickly took the textbooks to him. She apologized that she supposed to have given it to his brother but she couldn't open it immediately because she doesn't know what was written in the letter. They both continued with there relationship without anything attached, they did their homeworks together and help themselves where necessary. The boy used to visit Nana in her house while Nana also paid him a visit in his house without anything attached, they loved keeping each other's company and they were so closed.
