Nana's Decision After Secondary School

The results came out after two months and Nana still failed in mathematics and her best subject was mathematics. She loves mathematics so much, to the extent that she used to came first in mathematics. She was not feeling okay for having issues with mathematics all the time. She decided to earn money by working for a while before she register for another exam, so, she decided to go into teaching. She applied to a private primary school in that same town but had to take tricycle when going and coming. She submitted her CV and wrote a letter to the school and she was called for an interview the following day. On getting there, it was her primary school headteacher that owns the school, she quickly ran to her and got to know that the woman sent for her immediately she saw her resume, she was given a privileged of being the overall best student in her primary school. The woman asked her that which class would she be able to handle? and also told her to prepare herself to resume work the following Monday. She appreciated the woman and thanked her for the privileged given to have teaching experience. When she resumes work, the woman organized a seminar to train all the teachers on how to teach effectively in the class and how to handle extra curricular activities for the pupils. They were given a certificate to denote that they have undergone a teacher's training.

Nana started teaching primary three pupils, she does very well in her first day at school, she got to school early and dress well and neat. The woman was so impressed, she doesn't want to regret her actions of trusting her. The school headteacher was a Ghanaian man, he spoke fluently in English and helped all the pupils in the school so well. Nana was very happy having people like them around her, she took that as an experience for her. She did very well in school for the first week, got to school very early, teaches so well and also helped in other school activities. The headteacher and the proprietress really thanked God for sending her to them, they said that her one week here was the best so far, she performed more than the teachers that went through colleges of education. She was very brilliant and hardworking, she does her work perfectly with or without supervision. The following Monday, her step-mother told her she would have to hawk before going to work in the morning, and when she comes back in the evening. She pleaded that she should allow her to hawk only in the evening but the woman insisted that she must hawk. So, she hawks that Monday morning, on her way, she saw the school bus conveying the pupils to school, she hid herself behind a house and quickly rushed back home to prepare for the school, the woman told her that she didn't sell very well, she said she would not accept it, but Nana told her that she would have to take it like that because, her money will be deducted if she go late to school. She devised another plan that, the woman should not feed her again, that she would feed herself, she should not worry, just for her to stop hawking. She was trying to avoid a case where the pupils will see her, but the woman didn't allow that, she said it will reduce her income. She said in as much as she was living with her in that house, she would have to follow her orders. Nana vowed that she would have to find a way to leave that house no matter because there was no future for her in that house. The woman even told her that, she would be the one to collect her salary, she should just do the work and she would collect the money.

One day, she was hawking in the morning but didn't see the school bus earlier because someone was asking if she has a loaf of bread, so, she got carried away, the pupils saw her and shouted, "Aunty" see aunty, she was ashamed but couldn't hide again, so she told them that they should not worry, she would meet them in school as she went to carry the breads from the bakery. Thank God, she was able to distract the pupils in knowing the truth. She continued working without issues, she only got late to school sometimes but not Everytime. Teachers, headteacher, pupils and proprietress love her so much because when she's around, nothing will be left undone, she knows what to do and how to do it the right way. She teaches the pupils so well and there parents demanded to know the class teacher. The proprietress was always happy hearing good things about her all the time. When it was time to receive her salary, her step-mother called the proprietress that she would be the one that will be collecting Nana's salary, the woman was stunned that she's of age, that she should be able to collect her money by herself. The woman said she would only pay Nana her salary because she's the one that works for it and she would have to receive her hard earned money by herself, but when gets home, you can do as you wish with the money. When Nana got home that day, her step-mother told her what she concluded regarding her salary and she told her that she should not worry, she would give the salary to her. She collected her salary and gave everything to the woman. The woman prayed for her and that's all. Nana continued with her hawking and also doing her teaching at the same time, she did both work together without allowing one to affects another.

During the term she was employed in the school, she participated in the school activities, she trained the pupils how to be bold and how to do competition and debating without being shy. She helped them grow academically so well. Whenever they have the pupils award, she was always happy, she was happy that she was building the future of the leaders of tomorrow. She does her duty happily and joyfully, she was so happy to be around people with high intellects. After three months of the term, she was given award of the best teacher and hardworking teacher. Yes! She deserved it, because many people witnessed it and respected her for the job well done always. At the same time, her step-mother collected the three months salary without giving her a dime, she only benefited from the appreciation her pupils' parents offered and the award given and nobody was aware except the proprietress that has a hint about the situation but she doesn't know that the woman has been collecting the money without giving her a dime out of it and also doesn't know that she hawks in the money before coming to work. One day, the pupils were discussing about the teachers they love the most, and they mentioned that they only pitied aunty Nana because she hawks and she was so brilliant and intelligent, and have a beautiful face. The pupils said they hope they help her so that she would not hawk again and the proprietress overheard their conversations. Actually, Nana doesn't like people pitying her, she disliked it so much, that was why she doesn't share her worries and issues with anybody. The only friends that knew things about her were her friends in secondary school.

The proprietress called her attentions to what she heard but Nana denied it, she said she only helped the woman to take breads from the bakery but only hawk for her on weekends. The proprietress said that, all the same, she should not be hawking again now that she was a teacher and she was a role model and the pupils would like to be like her because they all admire her so much. The only thing was that, she doesn't get to the houses of the pupils' that goes to the school and most of the teachers in that school came from different part of the town. They all wasn't aware. The term was already at the end, which was December, they were all planning to go for Christmas and New Year vacations, so, Nana also planned to travel to Lagos to meet her elder sisters, but she was planning to go there permanently because of the shame the hawking was giving her, she planned it together with her boyfriend. Felix doesn't accept at first but he decided to let her be happy because he knew that she was always not happy for hawking before going to work. She felt so lonely and ashamed sometimes in front of the pupils. The school went on vacation and to resume the following year in first week of January. She also traveled to Lagos to meet her sisters but told her step-mother that she would come back before the school resumes. She kepts some clothes with her boyfriend and took little clothes along with her.
