Chapter 13 — A Daughter's Emotional Awakening

"When I met your mother 18 years ago. She was a very broken woman," Mr Cele started to clarify the story about her mother.

"She came looking for a job in my company. She was really desperate for it. She kept on telling me about her new born that she had left behind. I felt pity for her so I gave her the job as a cleaner. After a while we got close and we actually fell in love. I was happy to see her happy for the first time since I met her."

"So, if she got the job, why sis she never came back for me? That letter said love blinded her," said Qhawekazii with her calm voice.

"The reason why your mother left in the first place, is because your father was abusing her."

Qhawekazii was once again in shock to learn about that side of her father.

"Even when she was still pregnant with you. She was just his punching bag, almost every day," Mr Cele continued. "When we fell in love... she chose to start a new life with me. She chose to send you money instead of going back for you. She was also afraid of what your father might do to her after all those months that she had disappeared. Leaving you in his hands."

Qhawekazii felt emotional as tears pricked her eyes. She had never known the real reason for her mother's disappearance. She was raised to believe that her mother had abandoned her.

"Is she not home yet?" she asked, "I'd really love to be in her arms right now," Mr Cele sighed and looked down.

"Your mother is..." he paused while Qhawekazii widened her eyes, afraid what he was about to tell her. "Your mother is very ill, Qhawekazii. She kept her HIV status from me. And she took her medicine secretly. Apparently, she stopped taking them because she thought she was all fine because she looked fine. But four months earlier she got ill, and the doctors couldn't do anything for her,"

Qhawekazii's tears couldn't hold on for much longer as the devastating news broke her heart. She wanted to go see her mother in the hospital right away, but Mr Cele lied to her and said the visiting hours were over, because he wanted her to prepare for the worst.

"Tomorrow morning, we'll go and see your mother. I promise," he said, while he held her in his arms as she couldn't stop crying.
