Hailey's POV
The chandelier above us flickered softly as I turned to face Vickson. My heart was trapped in my chest like a wild animal yet I managed to keep my expression neutral. He had just uttered a truth that hung over the room in silencing suffocation.
"Say that again" I whispered and my voice barely audible.
Vickson's jaw tightened at the words. "Ava is alive, and she's coming back for the children."
The world seemed to tilt around its axis. I clutched the table edge to steady myself, feeling nausea twist my gut. No way this was possible. Ava had been confirmed dead following the attack on the rogue hideout. I'd read the reports. The charred remains found… they had said it was her.
"No… No, this is a lie."
"I wish it were." His voice was low, calm, and full of grim resolve. "But I have proof. She was never in that safe house when it was wrecked. Somebody helped her escape, and she's been hiding. Gathering power."
