I tried to take another step forward but the shadows between us pulsed, keeping me at bay.
She sighed and her face impassive. "Do you know? To be helpless while the world falls around you? To watch people you care for suffer and know you can do nothing to stop it?"
I had to push down a desperate swallow "I know more than you think"
She turned her head from side to side "No Vickson. You have always had control and Power. You don't understand what it is to be the one being left behind"
I clenched my jaw "So you bargained with him?"
Her lips tightened "I didn't do it for myself"
I drew a hard breath "Then who?"
She hesitated.
And then—she spoke a name that shattered everything.
"Ava."
A cold, strangling silence closed around us.
My brain was reeling. Ava?
She had been dead. Lost. Gone from us in a way that none of us could ever undo.
Or so I thought.
"You're lying," I whispered.
