Chapter 39: We Know Your Secret

The journey home felt longer than it should have. Lyra sat by the window of the carriage, her eyes focused on the blur of trees rushing by. Her heart weighed heavy, though she couldn’t say exactly why. Maybe it was the silence from Alina, the growing distance between them that now felt like a chasm. There had been no discussion after the king’s orders, no explanation, no shared sisterly comfort. Just silence. Cold, cutting silence.

The carriage came to a halt, and Lyra’s breath fastened as the familiar sight of their palace greeted them. She barely waited for the gates to be opened before she stepped out, her steps quick and determined, ignoring the stiffness in her legs from the ride. She needed answers. She needed to know what had gone wrong between them.

Alina watched as Lyra stepped out and walked away from the palace gates without looking back. It hurt that she wondered where her sister was heading with so much frustration but she couldn’t say or do anything.
