Chapter 53: Burning Desires

Alina sat on a stone bench near the central fountain, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. The cool breeze caressed her cheeks, but it did little to soothe the storm raging within her.

“Are you sure you’ll be all right?” Lyra asked, concernedly. She stood with Evelina and Serena who stood at the edge of the garden path, and watched Alina intently.

Alina forced a small smile, one she knew didn’t reach her eyes. “I’ll be fine. I just need a moment to gather my thoughts.”

“Call for us if you need anything,” Evelina said, her tone unusually warm.

“Of course.”

Reluctantly, the women left her alone, their footsteps fading into the distance. Serena disappeared. Alina leaned back, closing her eyes and taking a deep breath. The events of the day weighed heavily on her; Rian’s lingering presence in her mind, the attempted poisoning, and the ever-present feeling of danger.
