Chapter 39 – Becoming a Party Member!
Beijing Jiangong Hospital.
Orthopedic Inpatient Ward.
Dong Xuebing was rushed to the hospital by an ambulance, with Zhuang Zhi helping him get admitted. After a long afternoon of check-ups and treatment, his injuries were under control. He had minor burns on his arms and legs, sprained shoulders and ankles, and some cuts from broken lights, which were all bandaged. Overall, his injuries weren't too serious.
By evening, everyone from the General Affairs Office, including the leaders, came to visit him.
Dong Xuebing was lying in bed as a nurse checked his temperature—37.3 degrees. Just as she was leaving, Li Qing and Zhou Changchun walked into the ward. Dong Xuebing quickly tried to sit up. "Director Li, Chief Zhou," he greeted, but his shoulders hurt, and he couldn't sit up properly.
Li Qing stepped forward quickly. "Don't get up. Just stay in bed and rest."
Guo Panwei, who was there too, quietly brought two chairs for the leaders.
Zhou Changchun and Li Qing sat down beside the bed. "Xiao Dong, how are you feeling?" Zhou Changchun asked with concern.
Dong Xuebing, feeling a bit awkward with all the attention, coughed lightly. "Thank you for asking. I'm feeling better now. I think I can go home tomorrow."
Li Qing, who already knew about Dong Xuebing's condition from Zhuang Zhi, frowned. "Go home tomorrow? You can't even sit up properly, how can you think of leaving? Don't worry about work. Chief Zhou and I will handle your performance report and hospital bills. You just need to focus on getting better."
Zhou Changchun nodded. "Yes, take your time to recover."
Li Qing and Zhou Changchun were very grateful to Dong Xuebing because he had saved their jobs. Li Qing even poured a glass of water for him personally. Guo Shunjie and Guo Panwei, who were also there, were jealous. They had never seen the leaders treat a subordinate so well. But there was nothing they could say, as Dong Xuebing had done something truly brave.
Dong Xuebing had mentioned going home tomorrow casually. Seeing the leaders insisting he stay, he didn't argue. He actually didn't want to leave the hospital yet. First, he was still hurt, and his mother wasn't in Beijing to take care of him. Second, if he left too soon, Li Qing and Zhou Changchun might not feel as indebted to him. He needed to appear "seriously injured" to show the leaders he had risked his life for them.
Dong Xuebing might not be very smart, but he was quick on his feet.
After some more small talk, Li Qing's phone rang. He glanced at the number and stepped out with Zhou Changchun to take the call.
Once the leaders left, Dong Xuebing's colleagues felt more relaxed.
Tan Limei laughed and gave Dong Xuebing a thumbs-up. "Bing Zhi, I'm so impressed by your bravery! The fire was so big, and you still ran in. I was stunned!"
Changjuan laughed too. "You're not the only one! Everyone outside was shocked. We're just glad you're okay."
Old Yan smiled warmly. "Xiao Dong, you made us proud."
Dong Xuebing felt good hearing their praise, but he said modestly, "Stop it. I didn't think much. I just knew that if the documents were destroyed, the whole General Affairs Office would be in trouble. That's why I rushed in."
Guo Shunjie and Guo Panwei both knew Dong Xuebing wasn't telling the full truth. They thought to themselves, Would you really have risked your life if there was no reward? Who are you trying to fool?
But they kept these thoughts to themselves. No matter what, they were impressed by Dong Xuebing's courage. If faced with the same situation, neither of them would have dared to run into the fire.
Just then, the door opened again.
Li Qing and Zhou Changchun re-entered the ward. The people around Dong Xuebing's bed moved aside to make room for the leaders.
Li Qing sat down next to the bed and patted Dong Xuebing's hand. "I just got some good news. The Bureau has approved your application, and you're now a Party member."
Tan Limei and the others were surprised. "But didn't Bing Zhi submit his application only two weeks ago?"
Dong Xuebing was also shocked. "Me? Approved?" He hadn't even completed the required reports or attended any of the courses. Normally, it takes at least a year to become a Probationary Party member. How could he become a Party member just two weeks after submitting his application? Something didn't seem right.
Zhou Changchun laughed. "Your approval is an exceptional case."
Everyone in the ward understood what that meant.
Joining the Party through exceptional approval often happens during rescue efforts or in times of crisis. Those who show outstanding bravery or contributions are allowed to join the Party immediately.
Li Qing explained, "This afternoon, after the fire was put out, Old Zhou and I discussed it and decided to submit your application for exceptional approval. The call I just received was to inform us that it has been approved. When you return to work, you'll be sworn in as a Probationary Party member." Actually, Dong Xuebing's actions might not have fully qualified him for such an approval, but Li Qing and Zhou Changchun had pulled some strings to make it happen. Even Director Yan had supported the decision, impressed by Dong Xuebing's bravery.
Guo Panwei and Guo Shunjie were both jealous. It's rare to see someone get exceptional approval.
Dong Xuebing was thrilled! This was beyond his expectations. Becoming a Party member would look great on his resume. He showed a "grateful" expression and said, "Thank you, Director Li, and thank you, Chief Zhou. I won't let you down. I'll work even harder for the Communist Party and be ready to sacrifice myself for the Party and the people..."
Li Qing laughed. "This isn't the place for you to pledge your loyalty to the Party."
"Hahahaha..." Everyone laughed.
After all the visitors left, Dong Xuebing covered himself with the blanket and grinned. All his injuries were worth it. Not only had he gained the trust of Li Qing and Zhou Changchun, but even the Director and all his colleagues were impressed by him. Most importantly, he had successfully joined the Communist Party.
"Hahahaha... I'm a Party member now!"
