In the blink of an eye, more than half a month had passed. For Yuan, this period had been both busy and immensely fulfilling, and he had seen substantial improvement. As he grew more accustomed to his Mangekyo Sharingan, his physical condition and chakra reserves also increased significantly. However, his chakra growth continued to outpace his physical growth by a considerable margin. Yuan was quite satisfied with these changes, though his training partners found it grueling. Even when Yuan relied solely on his three-tomoe Sharingan for training, the intensity was still overwhelming for the elite ninjas he sparred with.
The real challenge for his partners was their reluctance to go all out against someone with the Mangekyo Sharingan. Their inherent wariness made the training even more taxing. Fortunately, their arduous days were coming to an end, as both they and Yuan realized that further sparring would yield diminishing returns. Yuan now needed to consolidate his gains, having learned so much in the past half-month amidst significant developments.
One notable change was Shisui's decision to become a freelance ninja.
"So, you've submitted your resignation and officially left the Anbu?" Yuan asked, sitting in a corner of a dango shop, noticing Shisui's determined yet somewhat forlorn expression.
Shisui confirmed with a nod, rubbing his temples as he glanced at the soundproof barrier he'd set up. "Yes, I've submitted my application and received approval. It's for the best. The Anbu's tasks are too demanding for me right now, and they've stopped assigning me missions anyway."
Yuan nodded in understanding. Given that Itachi had already approached the Third Hokage, Shisui's loss of trust was inevitable. Staying in the Anbu served no purpose, and his quick release indicated several underlying issues. Shisui was likely under close watch, or perhaps the authorities didn't care about the secrets he held. Reflecting on this, Yuan felt a bit frustrated; dealing with Uchiha matters was never straightforward.
Regardless of what Itachi or Hiruzen Sarutobi did, Yuan knew he had to remain cautious, restrained, and vigilant. The Hokage would never order the Uchiha's annihilation; he was too shrewd for that. The only person who might give such an order was Danzo, with the execution falling to Root ninjas, Itachi, and possibly Obito Uchiha. This was why Yuan closely monitored Itachi, ensuring all defenses were in place to prevent any surprise attacks. As long as they didn't act, the situation could be maintained.
"Let's change the subject. How's Itachi recently, and what about our clan leader, Fugaku?" Yuan asked curiously, tapping the table.
Shisui sighed when Itachi was mentioned. "Itachi spends most of his time with Sasuke, not taking missions or gathering intelligence. His behavior is normal yet strange, as if he's making up for lost time with Sasuke. It feels like a farewell," Shisui said, a hint of unease in his voice.
"As for Fugaku, he's shut himself away, seeing no one except for his wife Mikoto, who leaves meals at his door without seeing him."
Yuan rubbed his head, thinking how odd this father-son duo was. Itachi didn't share Yuan's ideology, and Fugaku faced the last stand before potentially being ousted as clan leader. Yet, one was doting on his brother, and the other was in isolation, making no visible effort to change the situation.
"They truly are two peas in a pod. Perhaps they have plans we're unaware of?" Yuan mused, shaking his head. Pondering their actions only caused more headaches.
"I understand. However, inform the clan to be extra cautious, especially with our lookouts. Adjust them as necessary and keep this change discreet," Yuan advised after some thought.
Shisui was taken aback. "Even the lookouts? Are you worried the village might..."
"Hiruzen won't, but we must remain vigilant. Remember, I've been ambushed before," Yuan explained, stating facts.
"Proper precautions are essential. Think of it as a necessary adjustment and repositioning," he added.
Shisui nodded seriously, recalling Yuan's ambush, which he suspected was Danzo's doing, though lacking proof. "Understood. I'll discuss this with the elders and finalize the details as soon as possible."
"Thanks, Shisui," Yuan said with a smile, though he hesitated to voice one last thought.
He was contemplating understanding Naruto's daily routine, given the Nine-Tails inside him. Naruto could be a potent bargaining chip, though the thought of using him made Yuan uneasy due to potential fallout and Shisui's likely disapproval. Weighing the risks, Yuan decided against it for now, merely considering more radical preparations.
Ultimately, Yuan realized that relying on himself was best. Only by becoming stronger could he eliminate all threats and dangers decisively.
