Born hurriedly checked the wound on Angelica's hand. It was indeed a bite mark, slightly inflamed and swollen.
A doctor approached and examined the wound. "Given her condition, it's likely that the fever is due to an infection. She needs antibiotics to reduce the fever."
Hearing this, Born thought for a moment and said, "Actually, it doesn't have to be that complicated. I'll try recruiting her. If it works, it will heal her wound directly."
He immediately called the system and attempted to recruit Angelica.
[Points -30, Recruiting, Resistance detected, Strong resistance, Recruitment failed!]
Failed?
Born didn't give up and tried several more times. He spent a total of 120 points, but none succeeded.
By all accounts, Angelica was now unconscious, effectively a state without awareness. As for the system's virus detection function, it only worked on Born's own maid corps.
Born felt helpless. They had previously collected some antibiotics. He immediately ordered the doctor to take care of Angelica and monitor her condition closely.
By the middle of the night, Angelica's temperature had risen again, her heart rate quickened, and she looked as if she were boiling, constantly sweating.
Without proper facilities, the doctor could only use oral saline to help reduce her temperature.
Perhaps due to the fever, Angelica started talking in her sleep again.
"Sister, we are scientists. We must believe in science. How could gods exist in this world?"
"Please, sister, don't make another mistake. There are no gods in this world. There won't be!"
"If you continue like this, I won't help you anymore. I'll leave the Starry Night Laboratory. I can survive on my own!"
Angelica cried out and suddenly opened her eyes.
She weakly looked around, seeing the doctor and Pearl carefully tending to her. Angelica opened her mouth as if to say something but then fell back into a deep sleep.
Strangely, her skin was no longer as red as before, and her temperature seemed to be gradually decreasing.
"Master, her heart rate is slowing down, her temperature is normal, and her breathing is steady. She's asleep," the doctor reported.
Born narrowed his eyes and asked in a deep voice, "Check the wound again. Are you sure it's a zombie bite?"
But now, the doctor was uncertain as well. It seemed like just an ordinary infection that had improved after taking antibiotics.
There was nothing unusual.
Born couldn't quite grasp the situation, but from Angelica's words, he could infer a few things:
First, Aileen had injected Angelica with some unknown substance.
Second, Angelica mentioned helping Aileen, which might imply that Angelica had also been involved in virus research.
However, this would assume that the virus was indeed spread worldwide by the Starry Night Laboratory.
Lastly, there was the mention of "gods." Hearing such a term from a biologist was certainly intriguing.
Their research focused on the development process from fertilized egg to embryo.
Born was silent for a moment, then waved his hand and said, "Everyone, get some rest. Remember to leave someone on guard."
Lane was the first to pull Born aside, taking him to a corner and once again serving as his pillow.
Sibley seemed to want to say something but ended up just stomping her foot and turning away.
Seeing this, Lane's lips curved slightly. She looked down and gently brushed Born's bangs.
Born, oh Born, when we meet again, you've gathered so many people around you.
If only we had stayed at school. I was the school beauty, and there were few who could compete with me for you.
"You have no idea how happy I was when you said you were looking for me, and when you asked me to come with you, I didn't hesitate for a moment."
Lane whispered in her heart, her gaze growing resolute as if she had made a firm decision.
She felt Born's steady breathing, glanced around, and bent down to give Born a light kiss on the cheek like a dragonfly skimming the water. She lifted her head, looking left and right, feeling guilty as if she had done something wrong.
...
Time passed slowly, and five days later.
Born decided not to deploy the combat vehicle yet, as Angelica's situation was still unresolved. Along the way, the school bus could no longer continue, forcing them to proceed on foot.
It took them five whole days to reach the vicinity of the exhibition hall. Born raised his hand and used his power to kill a zombie.
"The situation at the exhibition hall is unclear. The security personnel there might be armed, so it's best to avoid direct conflict. Let's find a place nearby to observe for a while," Born suggested, looking around and setting his sights on a hotel.
The hotel's main entrance was open, with zombies aimlessly wandering inside.
"Born, our supplies are running low. The hotel should have some stored food; we need to go inside," Pearl proposed.
Born nodded slightly, "That's what I was thinking too."
The group immediately moved towards the hotel. It used to be a famous five-star hotel in Dover City, standing 27 stories high. As a recent college graduate, Born would never have been able to stay in such a luxurious hotel under normal circumstances. Now, he walked in confidently.
Zombies swarmed, only to be held back by the maid squad. The lobby on the first floor was filled with zombies. Born quickly scanned the area and spotted the sign for the emergency exit.
Unable to use the elevator, they had to take the emergency stairs. Passing by the reception desk, Born jumped behind it, rummaging through drawers until he found an employee manual. Without looking at it, he stuffed the manual into his pocket and dashed out again.
The door to the emergency exit was closed and seemed to be locked from the inside. Born frowned and called Mia over, who immediately activated her berserk ability and forcefully broke down the door.
The door opened slightly, revealing an iron chain securing it from inside. Fortunately, Mia still had her fire axe. With a few chops, the chain broke.
Once inside, they were free from zombies. The ranged team stayed behind, using automatic crossbows to hold back the zombies, and then they re-locked the safety door. Since the chain was broken, they used a rope to tie it up, not knowing how long it would hold.
Born narrowed his eyes. Someone had locked the door, which meant there were people in the building.
"Master..."
"No worries. It's fine if there are people here, as long as there's no conflict. This is just a temporary resting spot," Born replied, leading his group upstairs.
After only a few floors, a dark gun barrel suddenly appeared, pointing at Born's head. He raised his hands immediately.
Several men in camouflage uniforms descended the stairs, their eyes cold as they looked at Born and then at the women behind him.
"You broke the door downstairs?" asked the leader.
Born shrugged helplessly, "We had no choice. We didn't know there were people inside."
