Memory Lane

Once they were all seated in the limousine the car began the short drive to the orphanage. Scott was on the phone with Nicholas making sure one of the transport vans would meet them at their destination as soon as possible.

"One of the children said that you built the den Ana. How did you manage that?" Lucas asked curiously.

Ana smiled at the memory. "When I ran, I was wearing a pair of two carat diamond earrings Seth had given me for my birthday. I bartered with the owner of the general store a few blocks down. He wanted them for his tenth wedding anniversary with his wife."

"Those had to have cost a fortune. What did you get for them?" Scott asked.

"I got the tent frame delivered. Then about thirty-five hundred dollars in store credit for supplies. I also got a two-thousand-dollar grocery tab. It lasted us kids nearly a year with careful use." Ana paused thinking.
