The rejection

The following day, after the class, Eve found herself sitting in the library again, this time with Victor beside her. He was methodically explaining the intricacies of their research project, his voice calm and steady.

"Do you understand so far?" Victor asked, his gaze penetrating. Eve nodded, though she felt a bit overwhelmed. "Yes, I think so. But why are you doing this? Why are you so insistent on tutoring me?"

Victor's expression didn't change. "Because it would be a shame if you fail as my assistant. That's why it's important that you succeed." "Alright. Thank you", she focused again.

Their study session continued in a more comfortable silence, Eve gradually relaxing as she became more absorbed in the material.

After they finished, Eve met up with Emily outside the library. As they walked back to their dormitory, Emily couldn't hold back her curiosity. "So, how was it?" Emily asked. "It was... intense, but helpful," Eve replied.
