Fragments of a Broken Night

…"You don't know what happened, Lucas. You…" her voice was slow and breaking with tears flowing freely.

It was obvious that something else was going on and I wanted to know what it was.

"The only thing I've asked since we reconnected is an explanation. I want to know why you threw away what we had without looking back."

And then she delivered the final blow of the night.

"I was pregnant," she said in a low voice.

Nothing in this world could have prepared me for that.

Lucas

Lucas looked speechless as he stared at me with his mouth hanging open. When he finally snapped his mouth closed, he shook his head as if trying to unhear what I just said. I wished he would just say something instead of gawking at me as if I said I painted the Monalisa. That was impossible but being pregnant was possible.

When he finally spoke, he still hadn't grabbed what I was implying.
