An Unexpected Invitation.

Ling stood in her father's study, the soft glow of the evening sun filtering through the tall windows. The District Head's expression was serious but not unkind as he addressed his daughter.

"Ling," he began, "I want you to invite Han Li over for dinner."

Ling blinked in surprise, her mind racing. "Father, are you sure? I mean, after everything that's happened..."

He raised a hand to reassure her. "I understand your concerns, but I believe it's time I get to know Han Li better. Besides, it's important for our family to extend our hospitality."

Though still skeptical, Ling nodded. "Alright, Father. I'll invite him."

Later that day, Ling found Han Li training in the garden at Old Li's home. She approached him with a mixture of excitement and nervousness.

"Han Li," she called out, catching his attention. He turned to face her, wiping sweat from his brow.

"Ling, what's up?" he asked, noticing her hesitant expression.

"My father... He wants to invite you over for dinner," she explained. "I think he wants to get to know you better."

Han Li's eyebrows raised in surprise. "Really? Well, I guess that's a good thing, right?"

Ling smiled, though a hint of worry lingered in her eyes. "I think so. Just... be yourself, okay?"

Han Li nodded, feeling a mixture of anticipation and nervousness. "I'll do my best."

The following evening, Han Li arrived at the District Head's residence, dressed in his best attire. The house was grand yet welcoming, with an air of history and tradition. Ling greeted him at the door, leading him inside.

As they entered the dining room, Han Li felt a wave of nerves. Ling's family, including her father, mother, and younger brother, were already seated. The District Head stood, extending a hand.

"Welcome, Han Li," he said warmly. "We're glad to have you here."

"Thank you, sir," Han Li replied, shaking his hand firmly. "It's an honor to be here."

Throughout dinner, the conversation was polite and light-hearted. Han Li spoke about his experiences at school, his training, and his aspirations. Ling's family listened attentively, and even her younger brother seemed genuinely interested.

After dinner, the District Head invited Han Li to join him in the library for a private talk. The room was lined with shelves filled with ancient books and scrolls, giving it a scholarly atmosphere.

"Han Li," the District Head began, "I wanted to speak with you in private to better understand your relationship with my daughter."

Han Li met his gaze steadily. "Sir, Ling is a very dear friend to me. We've been through a lot together, and I respect her greatly. Our bond is strong, but we are just friends now."

The District Head nodded, his expression thoughtful. "I appreciate your honesty, Han Li. It's clear that you care for Ling's well-being."

"I do, sir," Han Li affirmed. "I would never do anything to harm her."

The District Head smiled, a hint of warmth in his eyes. "Good. Now, there's something important I wish to discuss with you."

Han Li listened intently as the District Head explained the details of an upcoming astral competition. "Every five years, there's a significant event for astral users and warriors. It's an opportunity for the most talented individuals to showcase their abilities and earn recognition. The next competition is two months away."

Han Li's interest was piqued. "What does that have to do with us?"

The District Head leaned forward, his expression serious. "I want you, Ling, and your teammate from the school exam, the young man with the fire element, to represent our district's high school in the qualifiers. The competition begins with the top two schools from each district, and our planet has four districts."

Han Li felt a surge of determination. "What do we need to do to prepare?"

"The qualifiers will be challenging," the District Head continued. "You'll face formidable opponents, so you'll need to train rigorously. But I have faith in your abilities."

Han Li nodded, a sense of purpose filling him. "We'll give it our all, sir. Thank you for this opportunity."

The District Head smiled, placing a hand on Han Li's shoulder. "I believe in you, Han Li. And remember, this competition isn't just about winning. It's about pushing your limits and discovering your true potential."

As Han Li left the library that evening, he felt a renewed sense of determination. The upcoming competition was a chance to prove himself, not only to Ling's family but to the entire district. He knew the road ahead would be difficult, but with his friends by his side, he was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
