We exchanged glances, and he clearly hadn't expected to see me here; he paused for a moment, then called out my name: "Xiao Zhi."
He Cong is from Datong Electronics. On my way over, I had wondered if I might encounter him, and as it turned out, I actually did.
Just my luck.
Sang Qi looked at him and then at me, his lips curving into a pleased arc: "Manager He, you know my new secretary?"
He Cong appeared a bit startled: "New secretary?"
Looking at Sang Qi's smile, I suddenly realized that this whole lunch was deliberately set up for me to attend.
Xu Wan had said it, hadn't she? Secretaries usually don't accompany business lunches.
He knew everything about my situation; I think I took things too lightly at first.
There were four of us seated: Sang Qi and me, and from Datong Electronics, He Cong and their chairman.
If He Cong could attend a lunch with the chairman and Sang Qi, maybe it was Sang Qi who specified him.
He wanted to embarrass me.
It seems he doesn't know me well enough.
I've been through many embarrassing moments in my life, and I've become used to it.
So, during the meal, they talked about their stuff, and I focused on my eating.
The dishes I ordered upon Sang Qi's request were all of the luxurious kinds: abalone, sea cucumber, shark's fin, fish maw. I love eating crab, and I ordered two massive treasure crabs on the spot.
After the dishes were served, Sang Qi turned to look at me: "Are you very hungry?"
"Yeah, why else would I eat?"
"Order two more vegetable dishes," he said.
The wealthy prefer vegetable dishes when dining out, but us poor folks order what we can't usually afford to eat.
After the dishes arrived, I concentrated on eating, pretending not to hear what they were discussing.
He Cong kept watching me, then covertly peeled a crab claw and placed it in my dish.
I used my chopsticks to flick it straight onto the table; I wouldn't eat what he peeled.
This small gesture did not escape Sang Qi's notice, and he smiled faintly: "Manager He really knows how to be chivalrous, taking care of my secretary along with everyone; I wonder if such a good man is married?"
He Cong smiled awkwardly, pushing up his black-framed glasses: "Married, married."
"I've heard that Manager He's wife is a great beauty," Datong's chairman said with a smile: "And a journalist at that, Manager He is quite fortunate."
Datong's chairman hadn't met me, and I hadn't met him either.
The level of He Cong's business dinners wasn't high enough; they could only invite people at the general manager level.
I used a small hammer to crack the crab's massive claw, smashing the hard shell to pieces with a single strike.
Then I searched for crab meat within the hard shell while my phone began to ring beside me; hands full of crab grease, I used the back of my hand to tap it open. It was a message from He Cong.
Suddenly thought of something; you're not supposed to eat crab.
I turned my head and continued eating voraciously.
They say pregnant women shouldn't eat crab, but a friend of mine who lives by the sea had three kids while eating crab like a staple during her pregnancies, and each child turned out healthy and strong.
Besides, I'm not planning to keep the baby; right now, I'll eat whatever I want.
When I truly couldn't eat any more, Sang Qi and the others had barely touched their food, so I planned to take the leftovers to enjoy while watching TV that evening.
Sang Qi asked me to pay the bill, so I reached out to him: "Hand me the money."
He slapped a card into the palm of my hand, and I took it to settle the bill.
"Xiao Zhi," He Cong's voice rose from behind me.
I knew he would follow; I didn't turn around, too indifferent to want to see him.
He moved in front of me: "Xiao Zhi, how did you become Sang Qi's secretary? Weren't you resigning to rest up at the villa?"
"I didn't resign, I was fired," I corrected him, "Mr. He, after selling me, did you also get paid to make sure I gave birth to the child?"
"Xiao Zhi," he was barely containing himself, "I know you're angry with me, but what's done is done. Can't you be more pragmatic about it?"
I took my card back from the cashier and casually pocketed it.
"How pragmatic? Please, enlighten me."
"You obediently give birth to the child, then I'll come to take you back home personally, and we'll live together just like before, alright?"
I had too much crab meat at lunch, it was all stuck in my chest.
Right now, I really wanted to vomit it all over his face, but then I thought such good crab shouldn't be wasted on him.
"I gave birth to another man's child, and you can still accept me?"
"Yes, Xiao Zhi," he grabbed my hand, determined, "Xiao Zhi, trust me, I won't despise you. Just give birth to the child safely, especially if it's a boy." His face suddenly shone with an inexplicable glow, "If it's a boy, that would be even better."
I guessed that the other family needed an heir, so having a boy would solve everything in one go.
Seeing He Cong's reaction now, I was a bit puzzled.
He looked natural when he saw Sang Qi, and showed no particular reaction to seeing us together.
It was he who sent me to Sang Qi's bed, it made no sense for him to appear completely unsuspecting.
I stared at him, lost in thought: "He Cong, I'm asking you, answer me honestly."
"Hmm, go ahead," he said.
"After giving birth to the child, how much money will you get?"
His face turned red instantly, and he instinctively resisted, "No, impossible."
"I'm giving birth to someone else's child, yet you're not getting any money? Aren't we losing out on this deal?" I said with a smile.
He looked at me, trying to figure out if I was being sarcastic or if I had been driven mad by anger.
But I've always been unpredictable, He Cong should know that well enough.
He watched me for a while: "If I tell you, you won't be mad?"
"I'd only be mad if you didn't take a single penny."
Relief washed over his face: "Xiao Zhi, you're a smart person. You wouldn't dwell on unnecessary matters."
"How much?" I pressed him.
He hesitated, then carefully raised two fingers.
I hesitated before asking, "Twenty million?"
His eyes widened, astonished beyond belief, "What? Two million."
Two million?
I laughed, leaning against the wall to steady myself.
"Are you sure?" He sold me for just two million?
"Business is tough these days, money isn't easy to earn," he sighed, "It's just two million. Don't worry, Xiao Zhi. After you give birth, you'll also get a bonus of one million, and I won't want a dime of that. It's all yours."
Should I be grateful for his generosity and righteousness?
I clenched my fists and without thinking, I swung my hand and slapped him hard across the face several times.
Just then, Sang Qi and the chairman of He Cong walked out of the elevator, and they saw me hitting He Cong. The chairman's mouth hung open wide enough to fit a pancake.
He Cong hadn't expected me to hit him, especially not in front of an audience.
I noticed Sang Qi's expression, he was smiling but not smiling, with a look of someone enjoying a show.
The chairman finally managed to close his mouth: "Manager He, Secretary Xia, what's going on here?"
My palm felt numb from the shaking, and I told them nonchalantly, "Manager He harassed me."
