Chapter 7: A Tale of Victor Cane

.....

The fire crackled, casting long shadows on the faces of the crew as they huddled around it, seeking warmth. Fredrick sat apart, still trying to grasp the reality of his escape. He had been trapped for so long that freedom felt surreal. Ellie, unable to contain her curiosity, broke the silence.

"So, Fredrick. Tell me. How did you end up here?" she asked, her eyes fixed on him.

Fredrick stared at the ground, shivering slightly from the lingering cold. There was a long pause before he finally spoke.

"How did I end up here... I don't know," he muttered.

"You've got to be kidding me," Ellie said, her frustration evident as she started to stand up.

"But I do know that I've been after that treasure for years... decades even," Fredrick interjected, his voice gaining strength.

Ellie sat back down, her curiosity piqued.

"And I know you guys are after it too, but trust me. It's the hardest task you'll ever face," he continued, his eyes reflecting the flickering flames.

"What do you mean by that?" Isaac asked, leaning forward.

Fredrick took a deep breath, staring into the fire as he began his tale. "Long ago, this land was free. There was no curse on the water. We could come here and return to the earthly world whenever we wanted. But that all changed because of one man: Victor Cane."

The name sent a shiver through the group, though they had never heard it before. Fredrick's voice grew darker as he continued. "Victor Cane was a pirate like no other, ruthless and cunning. He was obsessed with the treasure, convinced it held unimaginable power. But when he finally reached the heart of this land, he found more than just gold and jewels. He found an ancient power, one that could bend reality itself."

Fredrick's eyes flickered with fear and anger. "Victor tried to harness this power for himself, but he was too greedy, too impatient. The power consumed him, and in his rage, he cursed the waters. No one could leave this place once they entered. The curse spread like wildfire, tainting everything it touched. The waters became a prison, trapping anyone who dared to seek the treasure."

"And the pirates?" Thomas asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

Fredrick nodded grimly. "The pirates who followed Victor Cane, those who sought the treasure for themselves, were doomed. They became cursed, neither alive nor dead, roaming the seas in eternal torment. They are bound to the treasure, cursed to protect it for all eternity. Victor Cane is the worst of them all. He guards the treasure, ensuring no one can claim it and escape."

Ellie shivered, not just from the cold. "So, these cursed pirates... they're our obstacle?"

"Yes," Fredrick confirmed. "And Victor Cane himself is the greatest threat. He will stop at nothing to keep the treasure from falling into anyone else's hands."

"Why didn't you leave when you had the chance?" Dr. Isaac asked, his voice filled with sympathy.

Fredrick sighed. "I was young and foolish. I thought I could outsmart the curse, find a way to break it. But every attempt only brought me deeper into the labyrinth. I lost track of time, lost hope. Until you came."

There was a heavy silence as the crew absorbed Fredrick's story. The fire crackled, filling the void with its soft, comforting sounds.

"We have to be smarter, stronger," James said finally. "We have to work together if we're going to break this curse and find the treasure."

Fredrick looked at him with a glimmer of hope. "Maybe, with your help, we can finally do what I couldn't."

The crew nodded in agreement, a newfound determination in their eyes. They knew the journey ahead would be fraught with danger, but they were ready to face it together.

As the fire began to die down, they settled in for the night, their minds racing with the stories of cursed waters and undead pirates. They knew their quest had just begun and that the real challenge was still ahead.
