"What's that?" Thomas asked, panic rising in his voice.
"It's a pirate crew, but it's not Victor Cane's, thank God. We have to move fast!" Fredrick yelled, his voice tense with urgency.
Dr. Isaac peered into the distance, spotting the source of the alarm. "There," he pointed. "A large ship is heading straight for us."
The crew turned to see a massive vessel cutting through the water, a pirate banner fluttering ominously from its mast. The ship bore down on them, its size and speed making it clear that escape was impossible.
"They've seen us," Ellie said, her voice tinged with fear.
Within moments, the pirate ship was upon them. A rope ladder was thrown down, and several men descended, weapons glinting in the dim light. The leader, a burly man with a scar across his face, jumped onto their boat, landing with a thud.
"Well, well, what do we have here?" the pirate leader sneered, drawing his sword and pointing it at Fredrick. "A bunch of trespassers in our waters."
Fredrick held up his hands in a gesture of peace. "We mean no harm. We're just passing through."
The pirate leader's eyes narrowed. "Passing through? These waters are forbidden. And where do you think you're heading, exactly?"
Fredrick swallowed hard. "We're seeking the treasure. The same one you and your crew are after."
The pirate leader laughed, a harsh, mirthless sound. "Is that so? And what makes you think you'll find it when so many others have failed?"
Fredrick glanced at Thomas, then back at the pirate. "We have a cartographer," he said, gesturing to Thomas. "He can read the map of the sea and direct us to the treasure."
The pirate leader's eyes flicked to Thomas, then back to Fredrick. "A cartographer, huh? That might just be useful. But why should I believe you?"
Fredrick took a deep breath, trying to steady his nerves. "Because we have the map, and we know the way. Keep us alive, and we can lead you to the treasure."
The pirate leader seemed to consider this, then sheathed his sword. "Alright. But if you're lying, I'll kill you myself."
He turned to his men, who quickly disarmed the crew, binding their hands. The crew was then ushered onto the pirate ship, their rowboat left adrift in the churning sea.
As they were led below deck, Fredrick whispered to Thomas, "Stay calm. We'll get through this. Just keep your wits about you."
Thomas nodded, though fear still gripped him. The crew was taken to a dimly lit cabin, where they were guarded by several armed pirates. The pirate leader addressed them one last time before leaving.
"Remember, you try anything funny, and you're dead. Tomorrow, we set sail for the treasure. Your cartographer better know what he's doing."
With that, the door was slammed shut, and the crew was left to contemplate their fate. They knew they had to play their cards right if they wanted to survive and find the treasure.
"Do you really think this will work?" Ellie whispered to Fredrick.
Fredrick sighed. "I hope so. It's our only chance."
Thomas looked at his friends, determination in his eyes. "We'll make it work. We'll find the treasure and get out of here. Together."
As the pirate ship sailed into the night, the crew braced themselves for the challenges ahead, knowing that the real test of their resolve was just beginning.
