The growls grew louder, echoing through the dense forest. Every shadow seemed to twist unnaturally, sending chills down Ellie's spine.
"Raine, what the hell is that?" Isaac hissed, fumbling with his pistol. His hands trembled, betraying his usual bravado.
Raine didn't answer immediately. Her eyes darted to the treetops, scanning every branch, every flicker of movement. "I don't know," she admitted, her voice low and tense. "But whatever it is, it's hunting us."
Ellie shoved the map fragment into her satchel, her heart pounding. "We need to move. Now."
Before Raine could reply, a deafening roar erupted from the forest. It wasn't an animal. It was something... worse.
"RUN!" Raine barked, shoving Isaac forward.
The three of them sprinted through the undergrowth, their breaths ragged and uneven. Whatever was chasing them wasn't far behind. Ellie dared a glance back and immediately regretted it.
Emerging from the shadows were figures cloaked in darkness, their forms humanoid but wrong. Their limbs were elongated, their movements jerky and unnatural. Glowing red eyes pierced through the gloom, locking onto their prey.
"What the hell are those things?!" Isaac shouted, nearly tripping over a root.
"No time to explain!" Raine snapped, yanking him upright.
As they ran, Ellie's mind raced. She remembered the man's warning: It's not just Cane... They're coming.
Was this what he meant?
The forest seemed to close in around them, the trees twisting and gnarling as if alive. The path ahead split in two.
"Left or right?!" Isaac shouted, panicking.
Raine hesitated for the briefest moment before pulling them to the left. "Trust me!" she yelled.
The group burst into a clearing, their lungs burning. For a moment, there was silence, the oppressive growls and footsteps fading into the distance.
Isaac bent over, clutching his knees. "I think we lost them."
"Don't be stupid," Raine snapped, scanning the perimeter. "They're toying with us."
Ellie knelt, trying to catch her breath. "What are they? They looked... human, but..."
"They're not," Raine interrupted, her voice colder than usual. "I've seen creatures like that before."
Ellie looked up at her, confused. "You have? When?"
Raine hesitated, her jaw tightening. "Let's just say... they're not from this world. And they don't stop until they get what they want."
Before Ellie could press further, the ground beneath them trembled. A low, guttural sound rumbled through the clearing.
"They're here," Raine whispered, her voice barely audible.
The creatures emerged from the tree line, their numbers doubling. Their glowing eyes locked onto the group as they advanced slowly, savoring their fear.
Isaac raised his pistol, his hands shaking. "We can't outrun them again!"
"No," Raine agreed, drawing her weapon. "We stand and fight."
Ellie pulled out a small dagger, her hand trembling. She wasn't a fighter, but she'd do what she could.
The creatures paused just at the edge of the clearing, their red eyes flickering as if communicating. Then, one stepped forward, taller and more menacing than the rest.
It pointed a clawed finger at Ellie.
"The map," it rasped, its voice a distorted growl. "Give it to us."
Ellie's heart raced. "What... what do you want with it?"
The creature's lips curled into a hideous grin. "To finish what Cane started."
Raine stepped in front of Ellie, her gun trained on the creature. "You're not getting anything."
The creature laughed, a chilling sound that echoed through the clearing. "You can't stop us."
And with that, it lunged.
