Chapter 3 - Day4-5

Day 4:

19:00

Today i didn't do much i wasn't in the right state of mind, i am still a bit lost but i strengthened my resolve, if i want to survive i need to change, to evolve, and i will, for sure.

Tomorrow i'll go back to the 12th floor, i didn't check the door maybe it's open, or maybe is someone alive in there?

And if i can't enter i will go down to another floor.

Day 5:

8:42

I am ready to go back outside, i check the peephole and open the door with my phone and my, now clean, metal bar.

There is nothing, i go down to the 12th floor i get on the floor, the 2 corpses are still there rotting and melting on the ground.

The smell is so bad but it's about time i got used to it. The sight is still horrific. I stay there for 5 minutes to look at them, to get used to it, it's not outside when i will be outnumbered that i can learn to keep calm in front of the zombies.

I snap back and reach the door. Hmm as expected it's empty.

*Sigh*

Will every apartment be empty?

"Wait a minute!"

The corpses! Maybe they have the key as they are on this floor.

I searched the first one with the skull looking like it fused with the wall. I found a phone, ID and the key to a car. I look at the id. Alize Kiurmav.

"Sorry..."

I pick the phone as mine will be out of battery soon and even without the passcode it has its use as a flashlight.

I get the car's key too, thinking that maybe when i get out of there i could use it.

I get up and start searching for the other ones, a phone, and keys.

My face brighten!

I try to put the key in the keyhole, and one of them goes in.

"Yes"

Should i open it now or should i try to look through the terrace like i did before?

No, it should be empty as the one with the key is here with me. I need to take the risk.

I open the door, i can't hear anything and i don't smell any blood either.

I still tighten my grip on the bar and explore every inch of the apartment to search for any traces of life.

I don't find any.

I get back to the door and lock it.

Now it's time to loot a little.

In the kitchen, i find a disappointedly low amount of food just enough for 3 days.

With all my supply i can live comfortably for 7 more days.

In the living room, there are some magazines and a pair of glasses among other things not note-worthy, i go to the bathroom and fetch every piece of drug and bandages i can find.

I took a break to take care of my wound from two days ago, seeing as i didn't transform it seems like the scratch is fine.

It would have been quite shameful to die in a 1 versus 1 against a zombie for a little scratch, not heroic at all.

I get back up from the sofa and search the bedroom. In the dressing, there is a wooden baseball bat.

"Quite a good fetch its better to have a backup weapon, because like on day 3 i could lose my weapon in the panic of a fight.

I found an external battery, it seems i'll be able to use my phone a little bit more.

I get to where my workplace is, it seems it's another room.

"Were they roommates?"

There is an xbox and some books,

-*sigh*

I want to play so bad but i just take some book that seems interesting.

So i got a little food some books a bat and quite a lot of medical supplies, it was quite a fetch i am happy.

I put everything in a grocery bag. And get out of here to go back to the highest floor.

I look at my watch.

11:00

It's still quite early, in the afternoon i will go yet again a floor lower, to the 11th floor.

I remember who the tenant is here i met her quite often it's a beautiful woman about my age, i'd say 25 maybe?

I hope she is alive.

12:25

After a good meal, i get out and start to go down before the 11th-floor door.

I put my head against the door, i can't hear anything.

I slightly open the door it seems there is nothing.

I fully open it and check where the elevator is, and nothing.

I let out a sigh of relief, here it's safe.

I go to the door and try to open it, it's closed.

"Of course, it's closed... Fuck!"

I start to get back to the staircases when i hear the sound of someone unlocking the door.

Then i saw her, she was in quite a state, she had dark circles under her eyes and it seemed like she cried quite a lot.

Unlike usual her brown hair which goes down to the middle of the back is messy.

It must have been hard...

With a shy and almost silent voice, she said hi, caught me by the clothes, and got me in.

"Sorry, i did this but its not safe to talk outside so brought you are, is it ok with you?"

-"That's.. alright"

"My name is Lana and you?"

I said in a timid voice, as i was quite intimidated.

-"It's.. Alex."

-"Are you alright Lana?"

She looked at me with a face so cold i was frozen.

She breathes in and says:

"Is anyone alright in the world? What do you think? Do you think some people are happy at this very moment?"

"Almost everyone died, my co-worker, my friends... my family"

Tears well up

"Almost everyone is dead"

Furiously she screams at me "How the fuck can i be alright you bastard !!"

I, flustered just looked at her while she vented her anxiety, and frustration on me.

When she finished she cried a little more wiped her tears and.

-"I am sorry i was too insensitive i just asked without thinking"

"No i am sorry i vented on you when it's not your fault, but thank you i feel a little better now."

She smiled at me.

I in a shy voice say at a low volume.

"Ha Ha it's nothing"

She invites me to sit on the sofa. And she then starts to narrate her story from before day 1.

She is an office lady but on this day she took a leave of absence and stayed inside watching TV. She saw the emergency messages. She saw the recording of people eating each other. She heard her mom die on the phone.

-"It must have been hard sorry"

She looked me in the eyes and started to cry again.

What did i do? Was i insensitive again?

Hmm?

That's odd she is smiling and crying at the same time.

After a while:

"To tell this has lifted a weight off my shoulder thank you"

"And you tell me your story please i am curious as to how you got there"

-"I live on the 14th floor and i was inside when it happened, i am trying to go down by visiting each floor one by one, you are the only person alive i saw in a week."

"But isn't it dangerous outside?"

-"Yes it is, i encountered 2 zombies but i killed them, it was quite messy but i survived."

"That's impressive"

-"They were only 2 but outside there are thousands of them"

"Still it's amazing"

While scratching the back of my head and a little bit embarrassed i answer

-"Thank you haha"

-"I will give you some information to survive in case you don't know: first scratch don't infect you, second aim at the head and three don't get bitten.

"I have some information too, there is a military camp that was installed in the outskirts of the city"

-"!"

I flinch

-"Really? That's good but we can't go there anyway"

"Yes..."

-"How are you in supply?"

"I still have about 2 days of food so it's concerning for me, and you?"

-"I have a week worth"

-"How about we live together as survivors i think our chance of surviving can only increase."

"Ok sure i think it a good idea and loneliness is the worst but we'll need more supplies with us two we have about 5 days of food"

-"I'll help you pack up"

An hour later :

"I am ready let's go"

-"Take the baseball bat, i take the lead"

We got upstairs slowly and without trouble.

-"You can go in my bedroom i'll sleep on the sofa"

"No, no, i take the sofa and you stay in your bedroom, i am a guest after all"
