Chapter 12 Haki

Another day began.

Life at sea remained monotonous. Robin, clad in a sleek black swimsuit, lounged on a deck chair aboard Gnar's weathered fishing boat. Sipping juice and engrossed in a book, she had become the boat's sole source of vibrance.

It was undeniable—under Gnar's care, Robin seemed to grow more alluring by the day. Once a charming girl, she now exuded a seductive allure that ensnared Nar nightly.

However, since learning about Haki training, Gnar could no longer find solace in Genuine Village as before.

"Unleash the body's ultimate power through the soul—that's Haki!"

Echoes of Dorry and Brogy's teachings on Little Garden filled Gnar's mind. Despite leaving the island three days ago, he remained clueless on awakening both Observation and Armament Haki.

"It's all TM Oda's fault!"

Despite being a time traveler with foresight from the manga, Haki remained a mystery even to its creator, Oda.

The most comprehensive explanation came from Rayleigh's lesson to Luffy, which barely touched upon Haki's essence—its nuances of presence, intent, and fighting spirit. Unlike series like Naruto or Demon Slayer, where Chakra, breathing techniques, and spiritual energy have clearer foundations, Haki's nature eluded Gnar.

Hoping for answers from Dorry and Brogy proved futile, as even they were stumped.

Yet, they did offer some insights.

According to them, Haki was a form of energy, akin to various forms of energy but distinct in its application—covering, spreading, enveloping.

The origin of Haki's power remained the pivotal question.

To Dorry and Brogy, Haki represented the purest embodiment of physical prowess, with the "power of the soul" acting as the conduit for this transformation.

But what exactly was this "power of the soul"?

Even they couldn't clarify, admitting,

"To be honest, we don't know. This knowledge has been orally passed down in our Elbaf warrior village."

"According to our village elders, the soul's various aspects—spirit, emotion, will, innate courage—can awaken Haki."

"How did we awaken Haki ourselves?"

"Hmm... It's been so long, I can't recall. Brogy, do you remember?"

"Sorry, it's been too long. I just seemed to... know it suddenly."

"Likewise. Don't fret—when the time comes, you'll understand naturally."

"However, based on our village's teachings, abandoning external aids and focusing on pure physical training accelerates Haki mastery."

"Purity of flesh?"

Gnar understood this concept well. In every fighting manga, physical strength formed the cornerstone of power.

Despite possessing the near-invulnerable abilities of a Mythical Zoan Bat Fruit user, Gnar didn't neglect physical training. His fruit's development prioritized enhancing his body's resilience.

This led to an ironic predicament—while Gnar rarely faced challenges due to his formidable physique, those he did encounter posed significant threats.

Unlike typical shonen protagonists who attract allies worldwide, Gnar preferred self-reliance and survival over reckless combat.

Mastering Haki became crucial to facing such challenges.

So, how could Gnar, with his current strength, effectively train Haki?

Wanokuni's tale in the manga offered a clue.

"Perhaps it's time to find some Seastone!"

In any battle manga, weight training, especially at a Seastone factory, represented a swift, effective method.

But where could Gnar find Seastone?

As one of the rarest ores, Seastone proved elusive. Despite years in West Blue, Gnar had never encountered it.

Alabasta, however, as one of the twenty World Government-affiliated superpowers, might harbor Seastone.

Robin's remark jolted Gnar from his musings.

"Ah, it's that time already. Is Miss Zala still asleep?"

Gnar's blood connection with Zala alerted him—an unexpected development.

Without hesitation, Gnar dashed towards Baroque Works' massive ship.

Moments later, a baffled Robin saw Gnar emerge on deck, cradling Zala in a blanket.

"Robin, Zala has a fever!"

Robin saw Zala, flushed and sweating, unconscious and muttering in pain.

"How did this happen?"

"My oversight. Forgot some mosquitoes on Prehistoric Island carry lethal viruses."

"!!!"

Robin, relieved she'd instinctively used mosquito repellent, felt Zala's feverish brow.

"Any medicine onboard, Gnar? Do you know what virus this is?"

How could Nar know? He'd forgotten many details. Time was of the essence.

A night spent in intimacy was a gift. Gnar couldn't let Zala perish.

"Robin, check if any of those log poses we bought are from Drum Kingdom. We may need to change course temporarily..."
