Chapter 7: The Distance

Transitioning to a new section without Jackie was a significant adjustment. Although I recognized a few familiar faces among my new classmates, I chose to sit alone in front to give myself space to process and reflect.

On my left, I struck up a friendship with a guy named Jett. He was outgoing, shared my interests in sports and video games, and quickly became someone I could vibe with.

As the class ended, I noticed Jackie smiling across the hall. She teasingly asked, "How was your first day without me? Did you make any new friends?" I couldn't help but smile back and replied, "It's not the same without you, but I did make a new friend, Jett. He's a great guy." Her response caught me off guard as she playfully protested, "No! I meant did you make a new girl friend?" I chuckled and clarified, "Oh, if that's what you meant, then no, not yet." Jackie's smile held a mix of satisfaction and concern. It made my heart flutter, realizing she cared about me finding new friendships, especially with girls.

It was clear she wanted the best for me, and her concern hinted at a deeper connection between us. Her words lingered in my mind, stirring a newfound sense of hope and possibility.
