Chapter 17:The Military Man

The days passed with a gentle rhythm, as if the world around Cavendish Manor had slowed to accommodate the simmering tension that was beginning to take root. The estate itself, vast and grand, continued its usual course—grand dinners, quiet afternoons in the garden, and the soft rustle of leaves in the cool autumn breeze. Yet, there was a subtle change in the air, one that Eleanor could feel but could not quite place.

William Hastings had started to appear more frequently. At first, it was merely casual—a passing visit or an invitation to join in the social activities of the manor. But over time, his visits became more regular. He seemed to find reasons to be in Cavendish Manor’s vicinity, whether it was to offer assistance with estate matters or to provide help with social gatherings. He was a man of duty, after all, and there was a certain practicality to his presence.
