People made way as they passed. For those who did not, Marx just brushed his way past them. He let Mia take him to her home. It was almost 200 meters from the market. The house was larger than the others. There were also other houses in the perimeter. There were two guards at the gate. He could already guess that this was the chief's place.
Maybe he would get a better shot after convincing the chief. Which he did not think he had. They stood at the gate and the two guards had swords on their waists. They drew them when they saw the two coming pointing at Marx. Especially when they ssw his hand which was on her shoulder.
She appeared to be happy and she was wearing an upper clothing similar to that of the guy she was with. Just as the rumours wete saying. It should be noted that even though women were undermined, they were very much worthy. A lady was worth more than a herd of cattles.
This was why they were held back from freedom and were forced to follow such rules. And her as a chief's daughter, she could not just go out with anyone. She was not even of marriage age yet. Seeing her new dressing meant many things.
The first thing being that she had fallen for a foreigner. This was the first factor that deducted Marx's points. Also, he seemed that he was no much older than her with many months. It was clear that they were all kids.
The chief's daughter was the most treasured and even her father could not take her presence lightly. She was a very important card to the chief. Any man who dared get close to her, oftenly disappeared without trace.
She seemed oblivious to this and she even dared to bring a man home... Not a man, a boy. The guards did not know whether to let them in or just arrest the guy in the the guise of caution against visitors. Maybe if they knew how he had caused a commotion in the market, they would arrest him immediately.
"You are still not going to let us pass?" She asked the guards. They all knew how precious and worthy she was despite being beautiful. Even her brother was going to have to suffer for laying his hands on her though not that dire consequences
He was allowed to teach her a lesson but he could not just go teaching her a lesson in front of everyone. They looked down and stepped away. No one ever tried to lay their eyes on her in close range. They usually had to close their eyes when they saw her pass or they would have their eyes gorged out.
One could wonder what type of society this was. They make them walk almost fully naked then stop other from viewing. Very hypocritical. This was why Marx had been sent here to get rid of this culture. Mia had been shocked when Marx kept staring even when she was no more than half a meter away. It was like he did not care for his eyes.
When the two guards heard her speak to them, it felt like her voice could melt their hearts. They stepped away and let them pass. They were left in daze replaying her voice in their mind. Not everyone got to hear her voice. It was a pleasure they had.
Marx let go of her and followed her inside. The compound was spacious and the whole place was almost hundred meters long. The place was supposed to be beautiful though the beauty was diminished in the dark.
"Where are you taking me?" Marx asked. He was curious where she would take him.
"I want you to meet the chief, my father," she said and pulled him forward heading in a certain direction. Marx just obliged and soon they arrived but it was like they had miscalculated.
Over 100 men were waiting. Each one of them had a sword or a spear. They were all in their mid twenties or lower. They had probably been riled up to come out in large numbers and get rid of the number one competition.
Then in front of them all was a man in his late sixties. He was dressed with what appeared like a skirt. Instead of a turban, he was wearing a leather crown. His face was getting wrinkled but his demeanor did not drop. Even his muscles were still intact.
Next to him was a lady dressed in the same way. She was about to get wrinkles though. They were sitting on logs that were greatly furnished. The men all had a serious look as they waited for the chief to speak. Just then, someone came and reported earlier when they were still at the gate.
"They are here," he said firmly. The chief nodded. One could not miss the angry look in his face. His eyes did not have the blue colour but his wife had her eyes blue as those of Mia but they were fading with age. Even her hair was greying.
Every eye turned at them when they arrived. The chief gave his order immediately.
"Surround them," he said and they all took action. They all surrounded the two and then made a pathway for them towards the chief.
"Come to me," the chief said with an angry glare.
His words were impossible to ignore. His words were the law. One could just lose themselves when they heard his voice. One just did what he asked at will. The demeanor and presence of a leader. The aura. Marx even felt the desire to oblige but he was so hard headed that he ignored him.
Mia once again was tensed. Why was this happening? Since they started walking together, they had been getting in trouble with every passing hour. Was she destined to have the first person who acknowledged her presence and worth die? She knew that this council was an execution.
She shivered as he hands shook. Her heart beat quickly. She was the cause of his death. She was never going to get rid of this guilt if he died. Why did their ancestors have to be so cruel? She even started shedding tears once again.
She could already see the future. Her vision blurry. She was crying alone in her room locked up after he was killed. She was getting married even when she was not yet of age. Tears just fell uncontrollably. Then a moan escaped her lips. Her knees weskening.
But then she felt familiar warmth on her cheeks. Her sight cleared slowly as she saw Marx's face. Exactly what she wanted to see. Those blue eyes...
"What did I tell you?" He asked her. But the question just channeled more tears. Like they were from an endless source. "Hm... Repeat the words I told you," he said.
She tried to open her mouth but the lump on her throat acted up. She just broke down and started sobbing. Marx sighed again. He pulled her to his embrace as she sobbed in his chest. Just what did these people usually practice?
Why could she cry just at the thought of his life ending? Something was not adding up. It seemed that she must have been undergoing some things she could not talk about. She was almost of marriage age. What if there was a rite that they had to undergo before they got married?
He once again sighed. He was already holding himself back from killing them all as they stood. Rather than changing the culture, why not just get rid of all its practitioners? If he followed this line of thought, they would all die.
Why did it have to be her? Why was she born in this generation? She was too kindhearted and brave to be born of this era.
"Remember what I said. You are the bravest girl there is. Your heart yearns to have wings. Very kind hearted, yet the prettiest. You dare think of having freedom in this place where freedom is a taboo for you.
"You should know that I mean everything I have said. Do not let anyone other than me see your tears. You do not have to hide them from me, I will do everything needed to make sure that I see that happy smile of yours everyday. Just don't cry anymore, or I will cry," Marx said hushing her a sad smile forming on his lips.
The observers felt their rage build up. They dared ignore their command and start acting all lovey dovey in front of them. Didn't that mean that he did not even respect their leaders?
They also seemed to be angry by his words. Who did he think he was to make her hide her tears from them. He did not even hesitate to hug her in front of them all. Was that not utter disrespect?
His words seemed to reach the chief's wife's hidden emotions. She blinked her eyes severally to stop her tears from falling. She could not lose herself here. She knew that this were the words every lady in their village wanted to hear.
Yet, these muscle brain men of theirs never did so. They felt like these words were an insult to them all. She looked up for her tears were threatening to fall. There was no word he had said about her daughter that was wrong.
He was the only one suitable for her. If she could, she could have them get married. She never in her life seen a guy act that gently towards a girl. Someone who did not acknowledge gender boundaries. She had heard it all when it was reported.
She had felt like a new light was now shining in their dark world. If he survived, tonight, she was going to make sure that he married her the next few days even despite the fact whether the chief would agree or not. This was the man who had come to bring change to their life.
She wiped her tears which were falling on the side. She just could not stop herself. But his next words came as a thunderbolt. She even let out a chuckle that was at the same time a cry. No one was going to lay hands on him under her watch.
"Should I kill them all?"
