Chapter 209: Weird Valley
In the dense forest, a mopping-up team consisting of five professional knights was resting. The team was led by Commander Redal of Wubei Territory, and its members included four junior knights: Tom, George, Wharton, and Dandy.
They had traveled all the way north from Black Earth Town and had been living in this forest for nearly a month, having long since finished the food they brought with them.
But this was not a significant issue. The woods were abundant with wild animals, vegetables, fruits, and magical beasts, ensuring they had no shortage of food.
In this raid, Redal primarily played the role of a raider, leaving all the wild beasts and low-level monsters encountered to the four junior knights to handle.
This approach not only eliminated threats to the territory but also tempered the knights' courage and improved their combat capabilities.
Rather than calling it a mopping-up operation, it could more accurately be described as a military training exercise.
This was true for Redal's team, as well as for the mopping-up teams led by McKeon and Joffrey.
Now, except for Rogna, Kurami, and Horn, most of Ronin's professional knights were training in the mountains and forests.
Whoosh~ Redal jumped down from a towering tree after having taken a rough look at the surrounding environment.
"I vaguely heard the sound of waves earlier. I guess if we go a little further north, we'll be close to the end of Wubei Territory."
Wubei Territory was bordered by the Wushan Monster Mountain Range to the west and connected to the sea to the east and north. Now that Redal heard the sound of waves, it indicated they were approaching the northernmost point.
"Oh, the sea, I've never seen it before!" Tom said with some longing.
The other three nodded in agreement. They had lived here since they were young and had heard of the sea but had never seen it with their own eyes.
However, this did not prevent them from sharing rumors about the sea—stories of magnificent waves that could even overturn a cow and other strange sights.
As Redal listened to the discussion in a serious yet lively manner, the corners of his mouth couldn't help but curl up.
Speaking of which, he seemed to have quite a few memories of the sea, mostly about sailing with men and horses without knowing the destination.
"Okay guys, enough with your tall tales."
The commander interrupted the conversation and said, "If you want to know what the sea looks like, why don't you go over there and take a look?"
Everyone smiled awkwardly, immediately picked up their weapons, and continued to head north.
There is a saying, "If you run too far up the mountain, your horse will die."
Even though Redal had heard the sound of the waves, it still took them a long time to walk out of the woods.
When night fell, as they climbed the last peak under the moonlight, their view suddenly cleared, and they felt as if "after many twists and turns, when you think there is no way out, you look up and see a village with willows and flowers."
Descending from this hill led to a concave valley, and the opening of the valley faced the vast ocean.
"Is that silvery white the ocean waves?"
"Wow, it's so wide!"
Under the night sky, although there was moonlight, the sea appeared pitch black. Only the surging waves reflected the moonlight, presenting a silvery ribbon.
It was a pity they arrived a bit late. If they had reached the beach during the day, the view would have been even more magnificent.
Among the five people present, only Redal's expression slowly turned into a frown.
He could sense chaotic elemental energy in the valley below, which gave him a vague feeling of unease.
Moreover, the valley's color was very strange.
Even though the shadows cast by the mountains under the moonlight made the light in the valley not very good, Redal felt that the valley was unusually gloomy, and there seemed to be a lavender light surging.
"There's something wrong with this valley."
The people around him finally noticed the solemn look on Redal's face. They quickly put away their expressions of wonder and joy at seeing the sea and looked around carefully.
But their senses were not as sharp as Redal's, so they couldn't figure out what was wrong.
"Sir, what's wrong?" Wharton asked cautiously. He had never seen the commander with such a solemn expression.
Redal shook his head slowly. This was just his feeling, and it didn't mean anything definitive.
"Let's go down and take a look."
He took the lead and walked in front, whispering, "Pay attention to your surroundings and stay alert."
Tom was already on high alert. They quietly held their knight swords in their hands and followed behind Redal.
From the top of the mountain to the foot, although everyone was very careful, they did not encounter any danger.
But as they approached the foot of the mountain, they saw a scene that made their scalps tingle.
At the bottom of the valley, human remains were decomposed to the point that only gray-black skeletons remained!
Cold moonlight, salty sea breeze, and densely packed human skeletons...
Tom and the others had experienced a lot of fighting these days, and ordinary scenes couldn't scare them, but the scene before them made their scalps tingle.
"My lord, what is going on?"
George stuttered.
Redal also looked tense. It was hard to imagine that such a scene would occur in the uninhabited northern border of Wubei Territory.
"Don't panic, stay alert!"
He whispered, "This might just be a battlefield from long ago."
Redal picked up a long sword from the ground next to a corpse. It was already rusty and broke into two pieces with just a slight shake.
It was obvious that this group had been dead for a long time.
"If they were a tribe of savages who escaped here, then it should have been more than ten or twenty years, right?"
Could the battle between two tribes of savages have caused such a tragic scene? This seemed unlikely. After all, they were all fugitives. Who would fight to the death?
"Sir, there seems to be a cave over there."
Tom pointed down the opposite hillside where there appeared to be a huge cave.
Redal frowned, hesitated for a moment, and then walked slowly over there.
He was now a Silver Knight and could handle most dangerous situations.
Moreover, they had come out this time to eliminate the hidden dangers in Wubei Territory. It was impossible for them to encounter such a thing and not investigate because of fear.
Tom and the other three followed. It was safer to follow the commander than to stay where they were.
"There's something strange about this cave."
The more tense Redal's expression became, the closer he got to the cave, the more chaotic the elements of heaven and earth around him became, and the colder the air became, as if ten-thousand-year-old ice was hidden in the cave.
Finally, they arrived in front of the cave.
"There are footprints here!" George exclaimed in a low voice.
There was a lavender light shining in the cave, making the ground at the entrance flicker.
As light and darkness alternated, several people could clearly see footprints left on the soil.
Was there someone in this cave?
Redal raised his eyes and looked inside. There was certainly danger, but his desire to explore was growing stronger.
Should they go in and take a look? Or should they observe from outside for a while?
Just as he hesitated, the sound of footsteps came from the cave.
"Damn it, it's time to go on patrol again."
"I don't understand, Nebula. No one comes to this godforsaken place. Why do you have to patrol?"
"Hush! How dare you say that about the guard officer? Aren't you afraid of dying?"
"Hehe, if he wants to kill us, it depends on whether the captain allows it. It's not like he's the only one who's good in bed."
It was an ordinary conversation, but it made the people outside feel nervous.
"Back off and hide!" Redal ordered quickly.
The five of them quickly dodged to the side, hiding behind the huge rocks nearby.
