Chapter 14: Power Placement (Part 3/3)

As Mia rejoined her friends in the waiting area, their excited chatter about their own assessments brought her crashing back to reality. She was still just Mia Harper, the girl who could turn the world into a crayon box with a touch. One slightly successful test didn't change that.

Right?

"Earth to Mia!" Zoe's voice cut through her thoughts, accompanied by a gentle nudge that Mia instinctively flinched away from. "You look like you've seen a ghost. Or, you know, a really judgmental interior designer."

Mia blinked, focusing on her friend's concerned face. "Sorry, just... processing. How'd your test go? Did you start a plant revolution or what?"

Zoe's face lit up. "Oh my god, Mia, it was amazing! They had this whole greenhouse setup, and I swear, the plants were practically throwing a party when I walked in. There was this one ficus that kept trying to high-five me with its leaves."

"Sounds like a real... tree-t," Aiden chimed in, his skin pulsing with amused oranges and yellows.

Mia groaned. "I swear to god, Glowstick, one more plant pun and I'll turn you into a walking mood ring."

Before Aiden could retort, a booming voice echoed through the waiting area. "Attention, students! It's time for your group power dynamics exercise. Please proceed to Arena B in an orderly fashion. And remember, no powers in the hallways!"

The crowd of students began to move, a nervous energy buzzing through the air. Mia exchanged glances with Zoe and Aiden, a mix of excitement and apprehension on their faces.

"Group exercise?" Lily piped up, appearing at Mia's elbow. "What do you think that means?"

Mia shrugged. "Knowing this place? Probably some kind of demented superhero trust fall. 'Don't worry, Jimmy, I'm sure Sally's ability to talk to dust bunnies will totally save you from plummeting to your doom.'"

As they filed into Arena B, Mia's jaw dropped. The space was enormous, easily the size of several football fields, and filled with the most bizarre obstacle course she'd ever seen. There were walls that seemed to shift and change, pits filled with what looked suspiciously like jello, and was that a section where the floor was literally disappearing and reappearing?

"Holy shit," Aiden breathed, his glow intensifying with excitement. "It's like someone took American Ninja Warrior and injected it with radioactive steroids."

A stern-looking woman with steel-gray hair and eyes that literally crackled with electricity stepped forward. "Welcome, students, to your group power dynamics exercise. I am Professor Volt, and I'll be overseeing this... experiment."

Mia leaned over to Zoe, whispering, "Ten bucks says her idea of a fun weekend is electrocuting small animals."

Zoe elbowed her, but Mia could see the corners of her mouth twitching.

Professor Volt continued, her voice carrying easily over the murmurs of the students. "You will be divided into teams of six. Your objective is simple: complete the course as a team, using your powers in creative and cooperative ways. The catch? You must all cross the finish line together, or none of you pass."

A chorus of groans and nervous whispers broke out. Mia felt her stomach drop. Working as a team? With her uncontrollable, everything-I-touch-turns-to-rainbow power? This was going to be a disaster of epic, technicolor proportions.

"Oh, and one more thing," Professor Volt added, a hint of what might have been amusement in her voice. "Each team will include one student with a major power. Consider it... an extra challenge."

As if on cue, a boy materialized next to Mia, causing her to jump back with a startled yelp. He was tall, with windswept dark hair and eyes that seemed to shift colors like a kaleidoscope.

"Sorry about that," he said, flashing a grin that was equal parts charming and infuriating. "Didn't mean to sneak up on you. I'm Ethan. Ethan Fade."

"Let me guess," Mia said dryly, "you can turn invisible?"

Ethan's grin widened. "Close. I can phase through solid objects. And apparently, I'm your team's 'major power' for this little exercise."

Great. Just great. Not only did Mia have to worry about accidentally turning the entire obstacle course into a Lisa Frank nightmare, but now she had to compete alongside Mr. I-Can-Walk-Through-Walls.

Professor Volt's voice cut through the chatter once more. "You have five minutes to strategize with your team. Use this time wisely. The course will be different for each group, so don't bother trying to cheat by watching others. Your time starts now!"

Mia looked around at her mismatched team. Besides herself, Zoe, Aiden, and Ethan, there were two other students she didn't recognize. A petite girl with bubblegum pink hair was eyeing the course with a mix of excitement and terror, while a lanky boy with glasses kept muttering to himself and adjusting his watch.

"Alright, Team Rainbow Disaster," Mia said, clapping her hands together and immediately regretting it when they came away smeared with electric blue. "Let's hear what we're working with. Powers, go!"

The pink-haired girl spoke up first. "I'm Bella. I can create and manipulate bubbles. And before you ask, no, I can't predict the future with them or trap people inside or anything cool like that. They're just... bubbles."

"Hey, don't sell yourself short," Ethan said encouragingly. "I bet those bubbles could be pretty useful for, I don't know, cushioning falls or something."

Bella brightened a bit at that. "I hadn't thought of that. Thanks!"

The boy with glasses cleared his throat. "I'm, uh, I'm Theo. I can see about ten seconds into the future, but only for really mundane, boring stuff. Like, I know that in about eight seconds, Aiden's glow is going to pulse bright green."

Right on cue, Aiden's skin flared with a vibrant emerald light. "Okay, that's actually pretty cool," he admitted.

"Alright," Mia said, trying to inject some enthusiasm into her voice. "So we've got Plant Whisperer Zoe, Human Glowstick Aiden, Bubble Girl Bella, Discount Oracle Theo, Ghost Boy Ethan, and me, the Walking Paintbrush. Surely between the six of us, we can figure out how to not completely humiliate ourselves, right?"

As they began to brainstorm ideas, Mia couldn't help but feel a glimmer of hope. Maybe, just maybe, they could make this work. After all, if her assessment with Dr. Chromatic had taught her anything, it was that there might be more to her power than she'd thought.

Little did she know, this obstacle course was about to push her – and her newfound teammates – to limits they never knew they had.

As the team huddled together, the gears in Mia's head started turning. She eyed the obstacle course, her gaze landing on a particularly nasty-looking section where the floor seemed to be randomly disappearing.

"Okay, crazy idea time," she said, drawing the group's attention. "What if we use my color-changing thing to our advantage? I could mark safe paths or highlight dangerous areas."

Zoe's eyes lit up. "That's brilliant, Mia! And I could use the plants around the course to create bridges or handholds where we need them."

Aiden nodded enthusiastically, his skin pulsing with excited yellows and greens. "I can use my glow to signal the team or distract any automated obstacles. Like a really fabulous traffic light!"

As they continued to strategize, Mia found herself warming up to her teammates. Bella's bubbles, it turned out, could be used for everything from creating floating stepping stones to cushioning falls. Theo's ability to see mundane near-future events could help them avoid small but crucial mistakes. And Ethan... well, Ethan could literally walk through walls, which was annoyingly useful in pretty much every scenario.

Just as they were putting the finishing touches on their plan, Professor Volt's voice boomed across the arena. "Time's up! First team to the starting line, please."

Mia's stomach did a somersault that would have made an Olympic gymnast jealous. "Well, gang," she said, trying to inject some bravado into her voice, "let's go paint this town red. Or blue. Or whatever the hell color my hands decide to spew out today."

As they approached the starting line, Mia couldn't help but notice the other teams eyeing them warily. She caught snippets of conversation:

"...got the phase-shifter. No fair!"

"...that girl who turns everything she touches into a rainbow nightmare."

"...can talk to plants? How is that even useful?"

Mia felt a surge of protectiveness towards her ragtag team. Sure, they were a bunch of misfits with powers that seemed more suited to a circus sideshow than a superhero team, but dammit, they were her misfits.

As she glanced around, Mia suddenly realized someone was missing. "Wait, where's Lily?"

Zoe pointed across the arena. "Over there. Looks like she got placed in a different group."

Mia caught sight of Lily's familiar face among another team, looking slightly nervous but determined. They exchanged a quick wave before focusing on their own challenges ahead.

"Well," Mia said, turning back to her team, "I guess our inanimate objects will have to stay silent for this one. Let's hope they don't get too chatty without her."

Professor Volt raised her hand, electricity crackling between her fingers. "On your mark... get set... GO!"

And just like that, they were off. The first obstacle was a series of platforms suspended over a pit of what looked suspiciously like purple jello. The catch? The platforms were constantly shifting, appearing and disappearing at random intervals.

"Theo!" Mia called out. "What's safe to step on?"

Theo's eyes glazed over for a moment, then he pointed. "That one, then the third from the left, then... oh crap, they're changing too fast. I can't keep up!"

Mia made a split-second decision. "Everyone, hold onto each other. I'm going to mark the safe paths!"

She darted forward, her hands brushing against each platform she stepped on. Instantly, vibrant colors bloomed beneath her touch – green for safe, red for dangerous. It wasn't perfect; sometimes she'd mark a platform green only for it to disappear a second later, but it was better than nothing.

"Nice going, Picasso!" Ethan called out as he effortlessly phased through a section of disappearing floor. "Keep it up!"

They made it across the jello pit, only for Bella to slip at the last second. Without missing a beat, Zoe commanded a nearby vine to catch her, pulling her to safety.

"Thanks," Bella gasped, wide-eyed. "I owe you one."

"Save it for the next obstacle," Zoe replied with a grin. "Something tells me we're going to need all the help we can get."

The next challenge was a maze that seemed to be made entirely of mirrors. Aiden's glow reflected off every surface, creating a dizzying kaleidoscope effect that had Mia's head spinning.

"I can't see shit," she groaned, trying not to touch anything for fear of turning the entire maze into a trippy art installation.

"I got this," Aiden said, concentrating hard. His glow dimmed to a soft, pulsing blue that somehow made the path ahead clearer. "Follow me!"

As they navigated the mirror maze, Mia couldn't help but feel a spark of pride. They were actually doing it. Working together, using their supposedly useless powers in ways she never would have imagined.

But the course wasn't done with them yet. As they emerged from the maze, they found themselves face-to-face with what could only be described as a sentient tornado made of... wait, were those office supplies?

"You have got to be kidding me," Mia muttered. "What is this, the revenge of the disgruntled secretaries?"

The tornado whirled towards them, flinging staplers and paperclips with alarming accuracy. Ethan phased through the barrage, but the others weren't so lucky. Mia yelped as a particularly vicious rubber band caught her on the arm.

"Bella!" she shouted. "Can you trap it in a bubble?"

Bella nodded, her face screwed up in concentration. She thrust her hands forward, and a massive, shimmering bubble began to form around the office supply tornado. For a moment, it looked like it might work – and then a particularly sharp pencil punctured the bubble, sending it bursting into a shower of tiny, useless bubbles.

"Shit!" Bella cried. "I can't make them strong enough!"

That's when Mia had an idea. A crazy, potentially disastrous idea, but an idea nonetheless. "Bella, make another bubble! Aiden, hit it with your brightest light! Zoe, I need vines, stat!"

As her teammates scrambled to follow her instructions, Mia charged forward, her hands outstretched. The moment Bella's bubble formed around the tornado, Mia slapped her palms against it. Instantly, the bubble's surface erupted in a riot of colors, swirling and shifting so fast it was dizzying to look at.

Aiden's light hit the bubble next, refracting through the colors in a blinding display. The tornado inside seemed to falter, disoriented by the psychedelic light show.

"Zoe, now!" Mia yelled.

Vines shot out from every direction, wrapping around the bubble and squeezing tight. The combined effect of the colors, light, and pressure was too much for the office supply tornado. It collapsed in on itself, leaving nothing but a pile of very confused-looking staplers and paperclips.

For a moment, there was silence. Then Ethan let out a whoop of victory. "Holy shit, you guys! That was amazing!"

Mia stood there, panting and covered in a fine layer of multicolored dust, but grinning from ear to ear. "We did it," she breathed. "We actually fucking did it."

As they made their way through the rest of the course, Mia felt something she hadn't experienced in a long time: pride in her power. Sure, she still couldn't control when or what she changed, but she was finding ways to make it work for her, not against her.

They faced down a pit of quicksand (Bella's bubbles made excellent floating stepping stones), navigated a field of electrified pillars (Theo's ability to foresee where the electricity would arc saved them more than once), and even outsmarted a riddle-spouting sphinx (turns out, Zoe's ability to talk to plants extended to plant-based magical creatures. Who knew?).

By the time they reached the final obstacle – a sheer cliff face that seemed to stretch endlessly upward – Mia was exhausted, covered in a rainbow of smudges, and more exhilarated than she'd ever been in her life.

"Alright, team," she said, eyeing the cliff. "Any bright ideas? Besides you, Aiden. You're always a bright idea."

Aiden groaned at the pun, but his skin pulsed with amused oranges. "I could try to blind whatever's at the top? If there is a top. This thing looks higher than Snoop Dogg on 4/20."

Ethan shook his head. "I could phase up there, but I can't take anyone with me. And we have to cross the finish line together, remember?"

That's when Zoe's eyes lit up. "Guys, I have an idea. But it's going to take all of us working together. And Mia? It's going to involve a lot of color."

As Zoe outlined her plan, Mia felt a grin spreading across her face. It was insane. It was ridiculous. It might just get them all killed or, worse, expelled.

It was perfect.

Twenty minutes later, as they all tumbled across the finish line in a tangle of multicolored vines, glowing bubbles, and very confused-looking carnivorous plants, Mia couldn't stop laughing. They must have looked like the world's weirdest, most psychedelic circus act, but they'd done it. They'd completed the course.

Professor Volt stood at the finish line, her usual stern expression replaced by one of grudging respect. "Congratulations, team. That was... certainly a unique approach."

Mia, still giggling, managed to gasp out, "Thanks, Prof. We like to think outside the box. Way, way outside. Like, in the next county over."

As they caught their breath and watched the other teams tackle the course, Mia felt a warm glow of pride that had nothing to do with Aiden's light show. They'd done more than just complete a obstacle course. They'd proven that even the most seemingly useless powers could be extraordinary in the right circumstances.

Little did she know, this was just the beginning of her journey at Evergreen Academy. The real challenges – and the real discoveries about her power – were yet to come.

The next hour passed in a blur of adrenaline and laughter as they watched the other teams tackle their own versions of the course. Some fared better than others – Mia particularly enjoyed watching a team with a guy who could control cheese try to build a ladder out of magically elongated string cheese. It was a valiant effort, if ultimately a gooey, dairy-scented disaster.

As the last team stumbled across their finish line, Professor Volt's voice boomed across the arena. "Congratulations to all teams for completing the course. Now, if you'll proceed to the main auditorium, it's time for the moment you've all been waiting for: your track placements."

A ripple of nervous excitement swept through the crowd. Mia felt her stomach do a somersault that would have made an Olympic gymnast jealous. This was it. The moment that would define her entire experience at Evergreen Academy.

"You okay there, Skittles?" Aiden asked, his skin pulsing with concerned blues. "You look like you're about to hurl a rainbow."

Mia managed a weak smile. "Just peachy. You know, if peaches were prone to anxiety-induced color changes and existential crises."

As they filed into the auditorium, Mia couldn't help but notice the growing divide among the students. Those who had displayed more impressive powers during the exercise walked with a confident swagger, while others – like herself – seemed to be trying their best to become invisible. Well, except for that one kid who actually could turn invisible. Show-off.

The Headmaster took the stage, his silver hair seeming to defy gravity and his eyes crackling with energy. Mia was reminded of their first encounter in the welcome ceremony, and how much had changed in just a few short hours.

"Students of Evergreen Academy," he began, his voice carrying easily through the vast space. "You have all shown tremendous potential today. But as you know, with great power comes great... paperwork."

A ripple of nervous laughter swept through the crowd. Mia rolled her eyes. "Great, our Headmaster thinks he's a stand-up comedian. What's next, dad jokes about quantum physics?"

Zoe nudged her, but Mia could see the corners of her mouth twitching.

"As I explained during the welcome ceremony," the Headmaster continued, "Evergreen Academy operates on a track system: Minor, Intermediate, and Major powers. These tracks are not a measure of your worth, but rather a way to tailor your education to best suit your abilities and potential."

Mia couldn't help but snort at that. "Right, because nothing says 'you're all equally valuable' like literally ranking us based on how cool our powers are."

"Now," the Headmaster's voice took on a more serious tone, "I will announce your placements. Please remember, these are not set in stone. With hard work and dedication, it is possible to advance to a higher track. Conversely, failing to meet the standards of your track may result in... reassignment."

The tension in the room ratcheted up several notches. Mia felt like she might vibrate out of her skin from sheer nerves. She glanced at her friends, seeing her own anxiety mirrored in their faces.

"When I call your name, please come to the stage to receive your track assignment and schedule," the Headmaster explained. "We'll proceed alphabetically."

Mia groaned. "Great. Just great. Nothing like being in the middle of the pack to really draw out the suspense. Why couldn't my last name be Aardvark? Or better yet, Zygote?"

The names began to roll out, each one accompanied by a track assignment that seemed to elicit either elation or disappointment from the student in question. Mia tried to keep track, but it all began to blur together in a haze of anxiety.

"Aiden Glowstick," the Headmaster called out.

Mia gave Aiden's arm a quick squeeze, careful not to actually touch his skin. "Good luck, Lite Brite."

Aiden made his way to the stage, his skin pulsing with a rainbow of nervous colors. The Headmaster consulted his tablet, then smiled. "Intermediate track, with a note of 'exceptional potential in stealth and distraction techniques.'"

Aiden's face split into a grin so wide it threatened to outshine his actual glow. He practically bounced back to his seat, looking like he might explode from sheer joy.

"Way to go, Glowstick!" Mia whispered, genuinely happy for her friend. "Just try not to blind us all with your excitement, yeah?"

More names were called. Bella, the bubble girl, was placed in the Minor track, but with a special mention of "unique tactical applications." Theo, their discount oracle, ended up in Intermediate, much to everyone's surprise.

"Mia Harper," the Headmaster's voice rang out.

Mia felt like her legs had turned to jelly. She stumbled towards the stage, acutely aware of every eye in the auditorium on her. 'Don't trip, don't trip, don't trip,' she chanted internally. 'And for the love of all that is holy, don't accidentally turn the stage into a tie-dye nightmare.'

She made it to the Headmaster without incident, holding her breath as he consulted his tablet. The seconds stretched into an eternity. Finally, he looked up, his expression unreadable.

"Minor track," he announced, and Mia felt her heart sink. But then he continued, "with a special notation of 'unique development opportunities' and 'exceptional creative problem-solving skills.'"

Mia blinked, not sure she'd heard correctly. "I'm sorry, what?"

The Headmaster's eyes twinkled with something that might have been amusement. "It seems you made quite an impression during your assessment and the group exercise, Miss Harper. Dr. Chromatic was particularly impressed with your potential."

As Mia made her way back to her seat, her mind was reeling. Minor track wasn't unexpected, but 'unique development opportunities'? What the hell did that mean?

She was so lost in thought that she almost missed Zoe's placement. Her friend was assigned to the Minor track as well, but with a note about "high potential in environmental manipulation and communication."

As the last of the placements were announced, the Headmaster took the stage once more. "Remember, students, these tracks are not destinies set in stone. They are starting points on your journey here at Evergreen Academy. How far you go, how much you grow... that is entirely up to you."

His gaze seemed to linger on Mia for a moment before he continued. "Now, you'll find your class schedules and dorm assignments on your tablets. Classes begin tomorrow morning. Welcome, all of you, to the beginning of an extraordinary adventure."

As the students began to file out of the auditorium, a buzz of excitement and nervous energy filling the air, Mia turned to her friends. "So," she said, trying to inject some humor into her voice, "who's ready to be extraordinarily ordinary?"

Zoe linked her arm through Mia's, careful to avoid skin contact. "Are you kidding? After that obstacle course? I'd say we're anything but ordinary."

Aiden nodded enthusiastically, his skin pulsing with warm yellows and oranges. "Yeah! We're like... the League of Extraordinarily Weird Underdogs or something."

Mia couldn't help but laugh. "League of Extraordinarily Weird Underdogs, huh? I like it. Has a nice ring to it. Better than 'The B-Team' or 'Discount X-Men,' anyway."

As they made their way out of the auditorium, comparing schedules and chatting excitedly about their new dorms, Mia felt a strange mix of emotions swirling inside her. Disappointment at being in the Minor track, sure, but also a flicker of hope. 'Unique development opportunities,' the Headmaster had said. What did that mean?

As they were discussing their placements, Mia suddenly remembered Lily. "Hey, did anyone catch what track Lily got placed in?"

Zoe nodded, "Oh yeah, I almost forgot! Lily got placed in the Minor track too, but with a note about 'unique information gathering potential.' Apparently, her ability to talk to inanimate objects caught the attention of some of the faculty."

"Makes sense," Aiden chimed in, his skin pulsing with thoughtful blue hues. "I mean, imagine the secrets a building full of teenagers' stuff could spill. Lily's power is like gossip central on steroids."

Mia couldn't help but grin at the thought. "Well, I guess that makes four of us in the Minor league. We'll have to catch up with Lily later and compare schedules."

She glanced down at her hands, remembering the moment in Dr. Chromatic's lab when she'd managed to ever-so-slightly alter a color she'd already changed. It wasn't much, but it was something. A hint that maybe, just maybe, there was more to her power than she'd thought.

"You coming, Mia?" Zoe called out, snapping her out of her reverie. "We're gonna check out our dorms!"

Mia grinned, jogging to catch up with her friends. "Yeah, I'm coming. Let's go see what kind of color disaster I can turn our new home into, shall we?"

As they walked out into the fading afternoon light, Mia couldn't shake the feeling that this was just the beginning. Evergreen Academy had already thrown her for more loops in one day than she'd experienced in her entire life. And something told her the surprises were far from over.

Little did she know just how right she was. The true tests – and the true revelations about her power – were yet to come. But for now, surrounded by her friends and flush with the excitement of new beginnings, Mia Harper was ready to face whatever challenges Evergreen Academy had in store.

After all, she mused as they approached the dorms, how much weirder could things get? She'd already turned an obstacle course into a psychedelic playground and helped defeat a sentient office supply tornado. Surely the rest of the school year would be a breeze in comparison.

Right?
