EMILY
A week passed and I haven't heard from my mom I got worried and I have been trying to call her phone but there was no response. I had a knock on the door so I rushed downstairs to check, my first thought was my mom.
"Good morning are you Mrs Carter's daughter?! A woman who was standing on black said with a sweet smile on her face. I nodded my head.
Your mom passed away last night and she said I should give you this letter, am sorry about that and you must be shocked now I hope you can understand. The old woman beside her said.
I shot the door I could not breath properly, tears gathered on my face. I could not even think of doing anything else it felt like the world was upon me, I decided to open the letter:
"Hey honey how are you doing
I know you are gonna feel heart broken when you read this . I had kidney cancer since you were little, I and your dad were trying our best but he later gave up . Am sorry for keeping this from you I didn't want you to be brothered all I wanted is to make you happy always also sorry I haven't been able to come home I was in the hospital. Just know I love you so much baby always be happy".
After reading the letter it made me more sad, how could I have been a fool not to notice something was wrong with my mom, I knew I couldn't go to school again because I can't afford to pay my education fees.
**************
Months passed since my mom died, I lived alone, I also got a job in Dormeen company. It the only choice I had to survive, I never knew getting to work all by yourself was so hard.
Miss Emily what are you still doing it late already and you haven't sent the files on my table don't you know how to be smart in doing stuff said Miya. This was the worst old lady I have ever seen, Mrs Miya was a woman in her thirties, she was skinny and and fair in complexion.
" I would do that after am done with Mr Lucas files". I said with my heart pounding . She gave me a disgusting look before heading to the door. After completing the files I decided to give Mira a call.
"What's up bestie how is work she asked in an exciting tone.I was engrossed in a phone call with Mira when, out of nowhere, a black car sped by, drenching me in water. 'Who is this careless menace?' I shouted in indignation, my anger boiling over. Mira's concerned voice echoed through the line, 'What's wrong? What happened?' I took a deep breath, trying to compose myself, 'Some reckless driver just soaked me with water. I'm going to...' My words trailed off as I caught sight of the car's tinted windows, and a figure that seemed eerily familiar...
As I entered the kitchen, I couldn't help but think about Mira's quirky habits. Night exercises, meditation at dawn, and a strict vegan diet - she was a puzzle I couldn't quite solve. But despite her eccentricities, I had grown fond of her. She was kind, caring, and always there to lend a listening ear. I opened the fridge, scanning its contents for something to quench my thirst. As I poured myself a glass of water, I heard the sound of Mira's exercises changing rhythm. I glanced out the window and saw her moving into a series of intricate yoga poses. Her focus was admirable, but I couldn't help but chuckle to myself. Only Mira could make downward-facing dog look like a martial art..."
Ugh, Mrs. Miya was the last person I wanted to deal with on a stressful day like today. Her constant nagging and micromanaging always seemed to push me to my limits. I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself down as I recounted the day's events to Mira. 'She's just so... infuriating,' I said, shaking my head. Mira listened attentively, her expression empathetic. 'I know how much she gets under your skin, but try not to let her stress you out,' she advised, placing a soothing hand on my arm. I nodded, feeling a bit better with Mira's calming presence. But just as I was starting to relax, my phone buzzed with a text from none other than Mrs. Miya herself..."
I rolled my eyes, feeling my stress levels rise again. 'What files, Mrs. Miya? You know I submitted them on time,' I replied, trying to keep my tone neutral. 'Don't play dumb with me, Emily! The ones for the Johnson account. They're a mess!' I took a deep breath, counting to ten before responding. 'I'll look into it, Mrs. Miya. But I'm sure they were fine when I submitted them.' Mira, sensing my frustration, mouthed 'hang up' and mimed a throat-slitting gesture. I stifled a giggle, trying to maintain my professionalism. 'I'll send them again, okay?' I conceded, just wanting to end the conversation. 'See that you do!' Mrs. Miya snapped, before hanging up on me.
"I let out a deep sigh, feeling a sense of dread wash over me. Tomorrow was going to be a long day. The owner of the company, Mr. Johnson, was coming to visit, and I knew Mrs. Miya would be breathing down my neck, making sure everything was perfect. I closed my eyes, trying to calm my racing thoughts. 'Please, just let tomorrow go smoothly,' I whispered to myself. Mira, sensing my tension, gave me a reassuring squeeze. 'It'll be okay, Emily. You've got this. Just be yourself and show him what you're capable of.' I nodded, trying to muster up some confidence. But as I lay in bed, my mind kept racing with worst-case.
