Chapter 70: Contract Clue

Currently, Kain was on a train, so he did not activate the Radar.

It was only valid for 24 hours, and even if it did detect something he could contract outside, what could he do about it? Jump outside a train moving over 100 miles per hour?

He's already died once, he's not in a rush to experience it a second time.

When Kain was scrolling through the Mission Board, something bothered him.

There were also missions related to the beast-tamer entrance exam, specifically his performance on it.

One was to rank within the top 5 of entrants and would grant a corresponding amount of GP depending on his ranking, up to a max of 1000 GP. However, it had a pending symbol next to it. He already ranked first in the entrance exam, and should naturally be first among all entrants. If the System had just rewarded him now, he could upgrade the System while searching for his next contract.

Sigh

Well, at least he could look forward to a nice reward on the first day of school at least.

Looking through the other missions he also saw that each time he completed the re-ranking battles in the college, he would also receive similarly lucrative rewards.

Nothing else he could do while on the train, Kain spent the next 2 days travelling back to the southern region alternating between using the Planetarium and feeding Bea.

However, when his consciousness was in the Planetarium, he suddenly felt a pulling sensation outside of his body.

He snapped his eyes open and immediately ran to the window.

Trees, trees and more trees.

There were absolutely no distinguishing features for where they were or anything special about the area, but he was certain he had felt it.

The pull towards a suitable contract target. Unfortunately, the feeling was rapidly fading as the train sped away.

Kain really was beginning to consider the likelihood of surviving jumping out of the train, but forced himself to remain calm and not do anything rash.

Instead, he went to Bridge's room next door to inform him that he would not be going with him back to the orphanage right away.

Bridge was confused. "Why would you choose to stay in Starfire instead of coming home? We still have to finish packing. Also, once we are at the college it'll probably be nearly a year before we can see them all again. We should spend as much time with them as we can"

"I know. But I have no choice. Remember how I told you that I'm not 100% sure what my affinity is, and that it's hard to find something that I can bind? Well, I felt the pull from my affinity just now. I need to go see what it is."

Bridge got silent, before raising his head. "Well, I'm obviously coming to. I did say I'd help you as thanks for giving me Princess."

"Princess was a gift, you don't need to repay me. And I don't exactly know what I'm running into, it could be dangerous"

"I know. But we're family and it's because I know it could be dangerous that I won't let you leave me behind."

Kain wanted to continue to refuse because he didn't want Bridge to be in danger due to him, but he could tell that Bridge would still follow him stubbornly.

Not to mention…although he hated to admit it his capabilities without water around were severely reduced and where he felt the pull there was absolutely no water that he could see.

He really did need Bridge's help.

Giving in, Kain accepted his offer and returned back to his room.

When thinking about how he'd fight without water around, he was reminded that he doesn't currently have a weapon.

Of his 700 GP remaining, he'd need to use 500 GP to purchase the customizable weapon from the system.

'From 900 GP to 200 GP' Kain was in tears, 'I can't wait until school starts and I can get my 1000 GP for ranking first.'

After completing the purchase, he was brought to a customization page.

There were several shadowy silhouettes of a variety of weapons. Sword, dagger, short-sword, shield, axe, spear, hammer and more.

Despite originally mostly using daggers and short-swords, Kain had gotten used to using a spear in the past few months, and he also liked the extended reach it provided. Therefore, he selected the figure of a spear.

After making his choice he was brought to another screen asking him to select the weapon's attributes.

Usually, the attributes of the weapon would be determined by the materials it was made out of, therefore attributes that were rarer in spiritual creatures, would also obviously result in those attributes being rarer in weapons.

It was very luxurious to get to select his desired attribute at whim.

However, as Kain scrolled he began to realize that sometimes too much choice is not a good thing.

The long list of attributes had common ones such as earth, water, and fire. It also had attributes that Kain knew were quite rare like the mental attribute and shadow attribute.

However, there were attributes listed that he hadn't even known existed. Holy attribute? Evil attribute? Life attribute? Death attribute?

Although he could kind of guess from the names, he wasn't 100% sure what those attributes entailed. However, he was still tempted to pick them just out of curiosity.

'After all, something with a death attribute couldn't possibly be too weak, right?'

Kain was originally planning to just make an upgraded model of the spear he lost, but now his mind has opened up to many more possibilities.

He needed to think critically about his desired combat style and the sigils that would best complement it.

The perfect weapon for him wasn't necessarily the strongest in raw power.

A powerful and rare attribute may not be what was best for him at this point in time. Especially if he wasn't familiar with its effects.

Therefore, he reluctantly disregarded the attributes he was unfamiliar with and chose to only select from those he could already predict how they'd contribute to his combat style.
