Allen, feeling triumphant, took out the diamond ring. This was the ring he had bought during their wedding, and later, when they separated, Blanch had returned it to him. He had never been able to bring himself to throw it away, and now, taking it out again, it felt like a reflection of the passage of time.
Blanch didn't know that Allen had kept it all along. She was still in a daze as Allen slid the ring onto her finger and said, "There you go."
Blanch raised her hand and tilted her head, saying, "Why is it still…"
"Of course, something that belongs to you will always belong to you, no matter how much time passes."
Blanch smiled dreamily at the ring, "Good, my ring will always be mine. Now it won't leave again."
Seeing Blanch smile so warmly, Allen slowly leaned in to kiss her.
The next morning, when Blanch woke up and saw herself lying beside Allen, her head throbbed even more.
