Cruel Joke

Evara stood in front of the mirror in awe.

The dress that she had on her body was the most beautiful clothing she had ever tried on. Although it was just a maid's uniform, it was so lovely. There was a white shirt and a long black skirt. A small black top to go on the white shirt. She looked presentable for once.

"How long are you planning to stand there staring at yourself?" A teasing voice made Evara come back to reality.

Evara looked back in shock. Her eyes were big as she bit her lips nervously. Was it the man who was standing there at the door of her little bedroom or the aura of the man who was looking straight at her as if he was seeing right through her?

"That…" Evara struggled to say something, anything, and yet she could not.

The man was overpowering. Crown Prince Darcy was there. In flesh and blood and yet Evara thought that it was only now that she had really seen him.

Prince Darcy was in a royal uniform, ready to work. He was looking mature, making Evara look confused.

Crown Prince Darcy laughed as he turned around. "It's embarrassing that I have to come and look for my maid in person. Now come on and follow along."

Evara swallowed hard as she ran behind Prince Darcy. She did not know why he was there. She still had half an hour left before her time to work.

'Or did the butler make a mistake?' Evar's mind was going everywhere but she was sure that when the butler came in the morning with her clothes he told her specifically the time. It was 8 AM in the morning and she was supposed to be in the grand hall for the orientation so why was the Crown Prince here at her door at 7:30 AM acting like she had missed the time?

Evara's eyes looked at the back of the Crown Prince who was walking straight God knows where, The confusion was evident in her eyes.

'No one is here.' Evara thought as she blinked her eyes looking around. She could not see anyone's work. The corridors were empty. 'Of course, it is. There is still half an hour remaining.'

Evara rolled her eyes but soon her gaze popped out as she heard a commanding tone, "Look straight and walk. Why are you roaming around?"

'Does this man have eyes behind his head?' Evara wanted to ask the question out loud but she controlled herself.

Evara walked behind the Crown Prince as she entered a large door. She did not know what it was but soon she realized that it was an office. An office for the Crown Prince. Where he was supposed to do work. But why was she here?

Evara looked around the room but before she could evaluate the space, her eyes stopped on the man who stood before the huge table. And for a chance, the man was looking at her too.

Evara swallowed hard. She could see the question lingering in the man's eyes, 'What are you doing here?'

Although Evara wanted to answer the question, she herself did not know what she was doing here exactly. She shrugged her shoulders to tell the butler that she was clueless but before she could say anything the Crown Prince smiled. "Alan, this is Evara. And Evara, this is Alan, my personal butler."

"Although you both met last night, I want you two to be each other's confidence." Crown Prince Darcy said as he sat on the chair. His hands rested on the table as he folded them, making him look serious. "You both will be working directly under me."

"But Your Highness, we do not know her…" Alan tried to talk to Crown Prince Darcy. "Her origin is unknown."

The words were not said in a rude way, but they still pierced through Evara's heart. Her origin was truly unknown.

Crown Prince Darcy could see the change in Evara's expression. Although he wanted to comfort her, he knew that the lady needed to fight her own battles.

"Yes, it is true that I met her last night. Yes, it is also true that her origin is unknown but.." Crown Prince Darcy looked at her butler, Alan, as he continued, "I trust my sixth sense and it is telling me that she is trustworthy."

Evara was shocked by the man's words. She did not know how to respond but her eyes were shining.

Crown Prince Darcy smiled as he looked at Evara, "So are you trustworthy or not?"

Evara nodded her head in agreement. She would not backstab the one who helped her in her worst situation. "I will never betray you."

Crown Prince Darcy's lips curled up as he looked at Alan, "See. I told you she is the one." As soon as the words were said, Evara's heart was beating fast. She knew that the man did not mean the words in any other way but business, and yet her little lady heart could not handle it.

'Or maybe because he is too handsome.' Evara consoled herself as she took a few deep breaths and tried to concentrate her mind on what Prince Darcy was saying.

"So Evara, you are not here only to work. I want you to help me with something important." Crown Prince Darcy smiled, "You will act as my personal maid. You do not have to do much. Just follow me around and take care of everything I tell you to. Can you do it?"

Evara nodded her head. "Yes, Your Highness." Evara smiled as she looked at the butler.

The task was not so hard. So why was the butler against it? As if she was supposed to be on a secret mission. The question lingered on her mind but it was soon answered by the Crown Prince.

"Good. So you have no fixed working hours. You will be my shadow, from morning to end. From the time I open my eyes in the morning, till I close them at night. Understood?"

Evara swallowed. Was she always supposed to be there with him? She had never heard such a thing before. Or was it a cruel joke?
