Chapter 27: The Solution!
"What does it say?" Sabrina and Alex, hearing that Zen had found the scroll, came closer to take a look.
"It's messed up. Take a look." Zen handed out the scroll to Sabrina as she opened it up, with Alex glancing at it next to her.
'The maze killer is easy to kill, after he kills the person he aims for, and only after, a single touch will make him disintegrate like fog, however, be aware that whoever manages to kill him will in turn die too.' The letter said.
Sabrina and Alex's mood went to sh*t as the last string of hope they had was lost.
"What the fuck is wrong with these guys?" Alex smacked his head with his palm as exclaimed.
"They just want us to fucking die!" Sabrina threw the scroll to the ground angrily as she shouted.
"Sabrina, what can we do?" Lisa came closer as she asked Sabrina with teary eyes while holding onto her lab coat.
"I-" Sabrina didn't know what to tell the young girl; words were stuck in her throat as she could only think of a single solution.
Looking at those around her, Sabrina sighed.
"My trait is resurrection. When I die, I can revive once, after that, my trait will be in cooldown for two weeks." Sabrina announced. The group looked at her in shock; some even had hope in their eyes.
"Are you for real? That's amazing! If we use it well, we can get rid of that guy and get out of this hell." Lisa's eyes lit up in hope as she hugged Sabrina with full force, genuinely happy.
"Even if that's true... one of us still has to die." Dali's eyes had no sign of hope that the others had started to gain. How could he be sure that he wouldn't be the one dying next?
"I'll do it." Suddenly, Alex spoke. Eyes turned to look at him, as they weren't sure what he was talking about.
"Do what, Alex?" Zen asked, squinting his eyes.
"I will... act as the maze walker's target. All Sabrina has to do is touch him after he kills me." Alex explained his intentions.
"Why would you do that?" Zen genuinely asked; he didn't know where Alex got this idea but it was crazy. Why in hell would someone sacrifice himself for the sake of others? He wouldn't do it even if he had the chance; in fact, he was doing the exact opposite.
"I have my reasons, Zen. As far as I can remember, I was the cause behind the loss of other people's lives, so just this once, I want to be the reason why they continue to live." Alex stated, his eyes firm.
Zen just looked at him dead in the eyes without saying a single word; he couldn't say anything, even if he wanted, so he just respected the man's decision.
"We will forever remember this favor, Alex." Zen bowed in front of Alex; this was the highest form of respect he could think of, which was why he did it.
"Thank you, Alex." Sabrina followed Zen's steps as she bowed down; Lisa, Max, and Dali did the same; Alex just smiled.
The group couldn't stay within the area where one of their teammates lived, so without a word, they walked back to the gate of death.
Throughout the way, they were wary of the maze walker appearing suddenly but it seems like the entity had no plans on doing so.
When they were close to the gate, they came across a disturbing scene.
"Is that..." Dali, who was behind Zen, exclaimed in shock.
"Yeah, it's Melissa..." Zen squinted his eyes as he confirmed Dali's doubt.
What got them to make such a reaction wasn't the scene of Melissa's death nor her facial expression that displayed her unwillingness to die. No. It was the fact that she was...
"Disappearing into the maze..." Sabrina spoke, clenching her teeth together and sucking in from the reality playing out in front of her.
She was enemies with Melissa, Yes. They had conflicts and she hated her guts, correct. But she wouldn't wish for such an ending, even for her worst enemies.
Getting absorbed and becoming one with the very place that tormented you physically and mentally was not something anybody would wish for.
"Let's move; there's nothing we can do." Zen didn't stop for a single second as he continued walking forward. Why would they care what happened to someone who left them behind after saying all those things about them? No one, and certainly not when they were worried about their own lives.
While they did walk around Melissa's corpse, the scene they just witnessed became yet another reason for them to stay worried about their futures.
As if hell wanted to mess with them one last time, the second they took the turn that led to the gate of death, black fog materialized in front of Zen as the young man's heart started beating a mile a second.
"HAAAAAA!" Zen turned to look behind him as the obscene figure of the maze walker slowly formed out of the darkness and from that abyss. The light that was Alex was piercing through the fog with his hands outstretched, Sabrina coming right behind him.
When the maze walker fully appeared, Alex was already in front of it.
*Thump*
"I leave the group to you." Alex's smile was burned in Zen's memory as he was pushed away, the claws of the maze walker already halfway through the middle aged man's body.
*Slash* *Tap*
"Kuki?" The maze walker looked behind it while the body of the prey it had just killed fell, separated from the middle.
"KUKYAAAAAAA-" When it saw the hand of the scientist touching it, it freaked out.
"Heh, die, you bastard!" Sabrina's figure started cracking down as black lines appeared all over her body.
*Crack*
The bodies of the horrific entity that forever scarred the minds of the remaining members and Sabrina were fragmented into a million dark fragments.
