As the morning sun climbed higher in the sky, the group gathered around their self-appointed leader, the tall, muscular man David had observed earlier. His authoritative presence and confident demeanor seemed to naturally command respect from the others. He introduced himself as Mark, a former military officer with experience in logistics and survival training.
Mark began to distribute the tasks for the day. "First things first," he said, "we need to establish a base camp, find a reliable water source, and secure some food. We'll split into teams to cover more ground." He scanned the group, his eyes resting briefly on each member. "But before we get started, I'd like to know a bit about everyone's background. It'll help us work together more effectively."
One by one, the group members introduced themselves. The sharp-eyed woman was named Sarah, an engineer with a knack for problem-solving. The wiry man, Alex, reiterated his background as a former investment banker turned mechanic. The rugged man, who turned out to be a former park ranger named Mike, shared his knowledge of wilderness survival. The athletic woman, Lisa, was a personal trainer and nutritionist. The remaining two, Emily and James, had backgrounds in medical research and construction, respectively.
When it was David's turn, he hesitated briefly. "I'm David Green, I used to work in an office job, mostly desk work. But I've always been into games and, well, this whole situation feels a lot like one." He paused, then decided to share something more. "I discovered something last night. I think it might help all of us survive here. There's a skill called 'Observation.' If you concentrate on different objects for an hour, the system grants you the skill. I think it's meant to help us understand more about the things around us."
The group listened intently as David continued. "The Observation skill lets you see things like HP bars and status effects. It could be really useful, especially if we face more dangers like yesterday."
Mark nodded thoughtfully. "That's good to know, David. Everyone should consider trying to learn this skill. It could give us an edge."
With the briefing concluded, Mark assigned the day's tasks. "Mike and I will scout the area for a water source. Sarah and Alex, you two start setting up a basic camp. Emily and James, gather any materials you can find for building and crafting. David and Lisa, you're on food duty. See if you can find anything edible around here. Let's stay in pairs and meet back here in a few hours. Any questions?"
With no objections, the group dispersed to their assigned tasks. David and Lisa began exploring the nearby forest, searching for fruits or signs of game. They walked in silence at first, each lost in thought. As they moved deeper into the woods, David's mind wandered to the possibilities and dangers of this island.
About an hour later, a loud shout echoed through the trees. David's instincts kicked in, and he turned toward the sound, urging Lisa to follow. They quickly reached a small clearing and found Alex struggling against a wild boar. The boar had already gored Alex's leg, causing him to bleed heavily.
David's heart raced. Without thinking, he activated his Observation skill. Immediately, his interface displayed Alex's HP bar, showing 4/5 with a red blood icon indicating a debuff: bleeding. The skill informed him that Alex was losing 1 HP per minute due to the wound.
Reacting swiftly, David grabbed a small tree trunk from the ground. He rushed forward, adrenaline surging through him. In an instant, he closed the distance between himself and the boar. With all his might, he swung the makeshift weapon at the creature's head, landing a critical hit. The boar's HP bar dropped drastically, nearly empty.
The boar, momentarily stunned, turned towards David. Before it could retaliate, Alex, despite his injury, mustered his strength and delivered a powerful punch to the animal's side. The boar let out a final, pained cry and collapsed to the ground, lifeless.
The commotion drew the rest of the group, who arrived just as the fight ended. Emily, the medical researcher, rushed to Alex's side. With practiced efficiency, she cleaned his wound with water and tore a piece of cloth to bandage it. As she worked, David noticed Alex's HP bar gradually increasing, the bleeding debuff disappearing.
Mark approached, his expression serious. "Good work, everyone," he said, his voice steady. "We got lucky this time. Let's make sure we stay vigilant and help each other out." He looked at David and nodded in approval. "Nice reflexes, David. That could've ended a lot worse."
David felt a surge of pride and relief. The reality of their situation was sinking in—this was no game, and their lives were genuinely at stake. But with the discovery of his new skill and the group's collective strengths, he felt a glimmer of hope. They had a fighting chance, and with luck and cooperation, they might just survive the challenges this island would throw at them.
