The man in the coffin was utterly baffled by the crowd's behavior.
At first, Miss simply asked them to hand over the rewards they had received for free. It wouldn't have been a loss to them.
After all, they had only received the first stage rewards because of Leng Yanran, and she was also the reason they had the right to enter the second stage.
But they actually refused?
Now, look what happened—they ended up having to hand over even more of their Artifact.
"Miss, there's one thing I don't understand. Why don't you just let me kill them all and be done with it?"
"The Northern Region's strength is no secret to me. They don't even have a Boundless Realm expert. Could it be that you're concerned about something?"
The man in the coffin ignored the prodigies and turned to Leng Yanran, voicing his doubts.
"Don't ask too many questions," Leng Yanran raised an eyebrow, clearly not intending to explain anything to him.
The reason she didn't slaughter everyone present was simple: her master's words.
She remembered them very clearly. Her master once said that karma and sin exist in this world, and killing indiscriminately would easily lead to accumulating too much bad karma, which could be detrimental to one's future.
Her goal wasn't the Boundless Realm or the Spirit Dividing Realm. It was to attain the path of immortality and to be able to stay by her master's side for eternity!
For that purpose, she naturally wouldn't want to be burdened with too much bad karma by wiping out the forces of the entire Northern Region just because of a few words from these insignificant people. Karma wasn't something to take lightly!
Of course, if someone dared to provoke her, she wouldn't mind destroying a sect or two to make an example out of them.
As for disrespecting her, she could let that slide. But if anyone dared to disrespect her master, then she wouldn't care about karma or sin—she'd tear them apart limb by limb to vent her anger!
Before long, a small mountain of Artifact and Heavenly Materials had piled up at the man in the coffin's feet, comparable in quantity to the collection he had stored in the stone cave earlier.
After all, this was the Artifact vault of the first checkpoint of the Scarlet Cloud Immortal Palace.
Even Li Shenruo and Wang Yan obediently handed over their rewards without a word of complaint.
"The second stage is a test of one's natural talent, huh?" Leng Yanran said after reading the introduction to the second stage.
On the plaza for the second stage, there was a platform with a formation that could measure the participants' innate talent.
If they met the standard, they would pass.
Leng Yanran wasn't in a rush to test herself, wanting to first see what kind of talent was required to pass this stage.
"Fairy Leng, how about letting Wang try it first to clear the way for you?" Wang Yan stepped forward enthusiastically.
He offered to go first, though in reality, he was worried about Li Shenruo's Saint-grade talent. If she went first, he would have no chance at all.
After all, though he was considered a genius in the Eastern Region, his talent was only Heaven-grade.
Leng Yanran didn't reply, merely nodding slightly to indicate her approval.
She had no real interest in the immortal inheritance itself. The only thing that concerned her was the Artifact and Heavenly Materialsoffered as rewards.
"Thank you, Fairy Leng, for giving me this opportunity!" Wang Yan was overjoyed by her approval. After clasping his hands in gratitude toward her, he walked up to the testing platform.
He placed his hand on the spherical ball of the formation and channeled his spiritual energy into it.
The formation beneath the platform began lighting up one by one, revealing characters: Yellow, Profound, Earth, Heaven.
Finally, it stopped at Heaven-grade talent.
Buzz—
A ripple spread across the platform, and it rewarded Wang Yan with a low-grade Earth-rank magical Artifact.
However, three large characters also appeared on the platform: Not Passed.
Wang Yan was initially overjoyed to receive a low-grade Earth-grade Artifact. However, seeing the words "Not Passed" on the testing platform left him stunned.
"I'm a Heaven-grade talent! In the Eastern Region, that qualifies me as a top-tier genius!" he thought, unable to believe his eyes.
"How could I not pass? Are they saying only Saint-grade talent can inherit the immortal's legacy?"
Suppressing his anger, Wang Yan comforted himself by remembering that at least he had won a valuable Earth-grade Artifact, so this trip to the secret realm wasn't entirely wasted. He reluctantly stepped down from the platform and quietly stored away the magical Artifact.
Just then, the man in the coffin, who had been busy collecting the Artifact submitted earlier, turned toward Wang Yan with narrowed eyes.
"Boy, do you not know the rules here?" the man in the coffin asked coldly. "Every Artifact in this place belongs to my Miss. So what are you trying to do by keeping that Earth-grade Artifact for yourself?"
Wang Yan was taken aback. "What the hell? Sure, Leng Yanran helped us clear the first stage, and I handed over the rewards for that. But for this second stage, what did she contribute? Why should I have to hand over my prize?"
This Earth-grade Artifact was extremely valuable to him, and he wasn't willing to give it up easily, especially when he had earned it with his own talent in the second stage.
"Hmm?" The man in the coffin glared at him. "You've got some nerve, kid."
Before Wang Yan could react, the man in the coffin's face darkened even further. With a wave of his hand, he grabbed Wang Yan by the throat from a distance, lifting him into the air as he struggled to breathe.
Smack! Smack! Smack! The man in the coffin casually slapped Wang Yan across the face, each strike loud enough to make everyone present flinch in fear.
"Are you going to hand it over? Hmm?" the man in the coffin asked between slaps, demanding that Wang Yan surrender the Artifact.
Wang Yan: "...."
"Well, well, I didn't expect you to be so tough," the man in the coffin remarked, a hint of admiration in his voice. "You're practically beaten to death, and yet you still won't beg for mercy. I respect that. Since you're such a hard case, I'll give you a dignified death."
The man in the coffin, surprisingly impressed by Wang Yan's resilience, decided to end it swiftly. He tightened his grip on Wang Yan's neck, ready to snap it and make an example out of him. Although Leng Yanran had instructed him not to kill everyone, eliminating one troublemaker to scare the others didn't seem like it would be an issue.
But just as he was about to finish Wang Yan off, Li Shenruo, another prodigy from the Eastern Region, couldn't bear to watch any longer.
"Senior, please wait! Have you considered that maybe he's not resisting on purpose? He can't speak to beg for mercy because you're choking him!"
Li Shenruo's voice cut through the tension, and she glanced at Wang Yan, who was turning blue and purple from asphyxiation, his eyes bulging and bloodshot.
This wasn't about bravery or pride—Wang Yan physically couldn't speak because he was being strangled!
"Is that so?" The man in the coffin paused, loosening his grip slightly. "Ahem, I suppose that was my oversight."
