Chapter 50

Allison's POV

I can't go back to sleep. My hands grip the pillow, my eyes fixed on the glow of my phone screen as I wait, heart pounding, for a message from one of two people who can deliver the bad news I'm dreading: Darius or Jessica. My mind races, thoughts spiraling. How could Darius have ordered Gerald's death? I didn't even know that was something he could do. If it was so easy, why does he still need me for this mission? And why on earth did he have me call Jessica, telling her to warn her father? None of this makes sense, and it's driving me out of my mind.

Please, let Gerald still be alive. I can't start from scratch again. The thought is unbearable. Should I call Jessica back? It's only been ten minutes since our last call, but it felt like an eternity. Lying to her was excruciating—pretending I overheard people talking about Darius planning to kill her father tonight. What if she saw through me?
