Allison's POV
"What were you two talking about?" Jessica demands, hands planted on her hips, eyes practically sparking with suspicion. Her voice is sharp enough to slice through glass. "I separated you two for a reason, Allison. She's not as pure as you. I don't want her corrupting you."
Wow. My innocence seems like some prized relic everyone's guarding. But the rapid thud of my heart distracts me too much to dwell on it.
"Just... friend stuff." I keep my voice casual, though my pulse betrays me. "We were catching up. We kinda miss each other, you know? It's normal."
Jessica raises an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced. "Really. Just 'friend stuff.' She didn't ask you anything about... us? About how you became my girlfriend?" Her gaze pierces through me like she's waiting for the smallest flicker of dishonesty.
I hold my ground. "She did," I say, keeping my tone even, hoping honesty—well, half of it—will keep me safe for now.
