Kael's eyes fluttered open, the dull ache in his body reminding him that he was still alive. For a moment, he lay still, trying to gather his thoughts. The world around him was a blur of shadows and light, but as his vision cleared, he found himself staring up at the crumbling walls of a long-abandoned city.
Ardentia.
The name surfaced in his mind, unbidden. He didn't know how he knew it, but the ruins around him were unmistakably those of Ardentia, the once-great city that had been lost to time and war.
Kael struggled to sit up, his muscles protesting with every movement. His body felt unfamiliar, as if it wasn't his own. He looked down at his hands, covered in grime and blood, and flexed his fingers experimentally. Everything hurt, but it was a dull, distant pain, as if his body had been through something unimaginable.
He had no memory of how he had come to be here, no recollection of what had happened before. Only fragments of dreams, or perhaps memories, flashed through his mind—flashes of light, the clash of steel, the sensation of falling.
And a name. Kael. It was the only thing he was certain of.
Pushing himself to his feet, Kael surveyed his surroundings. The ruins of Ardentia were vast, stretching out as far as the eye could see. Once a thriving center of magic and culture, the city was now nothing more than a graveyard, its streets littered with the remnants of a forgotten era. Towering spires lay broken on the ground, and the air was thick with the scent of dust and decay.
Kael's gaze was drawn to the ground at his feet. Etched into the stone were symbols, ancient runes that glowed faintly in the dim light. He didn't know what they meant, but he could feel their power resonating deep within him, stirring something in his soul.
He reached out to touch the nearest rune, and as his fingers brushed the stone, a surge of energy shot through him, causing him to stagger backward. His vision blurred, and for a moment, the world around him seemed to dissolve into darkness.
In the void, a voice called out to him—a whisper that echoed in his mind, filled with both sorrow and resolve.
"Kael… You must remember… You must fight…"
The voice faded as quickly as it had appeared, leaving Kael alone once more. But something had changed. The pain in his body was still there, but now it was accompanied by a warmth, a spark of power that hadn't been there before.
Kael clenched his fists, feeling the energy coursing through him. He didn't understand what was happening, but he knew one thing for certain: he had to move forward. The ruins of Ardentia held answers, and if he was to survive, he needed to find them.
With a determined look, Kael began to make his way through the crumbling streets, his footsteps echoing in the silence. The city was a maze of broken buildings and collapsed archways, but something deep within him guided his steps. It was as if he had walked these streets before, in another life.
As he rounded a corner, Kael came face to face with a massive stone gate, half-buried in the rubble. The gate was adorned with the same glowing runes he had seen earlier, and despite the decay around it, it stood tall and imposing.
Kael approached the gate cautiously, his heart pounding in his chest. The runes pulsed with a rhythmic light, drawing him closer. Without thinking, he reached out and placed his hand on the cold stone.
The moment he did, the runes flared to life, their light blinding. The ground beneath him shook, and a deep, resonant hum filled the air. Kael staggered backward, shielding his eyes as the gate slowly began to open.
Beyond the gate was a darkness that seemed to swallow all light, an abyss that beckoned him forward. But as the darkness loomed before him, Kael felt no fear. There was a strange sense of familiarity in the void, as if it was calling out to him, waiting for him to step inside.
With a deep breath, Kael took a step forward, crossing the threshold of the gate. The moment he did, the darkness enveloped him, pulling him into its depths. The last thing he saw before everything went black was the runes, glowing brighter than ever, as if guiding him on the path ahead.
And then, there was nothing.
